Film or Theatre First, or Even Book When It's the Same Story?
Other
I have been asked to review The King and I at our local theatre. I have seen the original musical on film with Deborah Kerr and Yul Bryner and also the non musical film, Anna and the King starring Jodie Foster. Both are wonderful but am not sure the theatre production will live up to my expectations.
Do you prefer book, film, or theatre first?
MelissaLee1 I think I would go along with that as the book will give more detail that is handy to know in the shorter theatre and film versions. Same reason for theatre then film I think as it easier to go from scene to scene on film.
Lynibis Yes.Starts with pen on page. The rest is interpretation good ,bad, indifferent.
I prefer the film version over any stage production or the original book version. The theatre has a limited space to perform in and characters. So you cannot compare a local production with a west end show. Just enjoy watching a local production and give an honest review of it.
For me I would say film, book and then theatre. I don't have enough time these days to read books, other than to my son and our nearest theatre is over an hour away.
I prefer to see in the theatre first, then the film and then the book. By the way I do not read much. I saw Mama Mia at the theatre first before the film and was so glad I did as it was all new to me.
I prefer films so drag my husband to the cinema but he often comments that the book was better.
I'm not a fan of the theatre but have found books more satisfying that movies occasionally but generally always prefer movies.
I find films and theatre productions never live up to the book version and one's own imagination. However, if enough time has passed I don't think it matters as much.
butterfly835 I don't think the recent tv adaptation of Great Expectations starring Olivia Coleman went down very well. If I wrote a book I'd hate for it to be changed too much......I bet poor old Dickens was turning in his grave!
I suppose some books really should stay as books, but I think it depends. I've read quite a few Agatha Christie books and then watched them as plays and films, and enjoyed all of them equally.
butterfly835 I think books like that transpose well on to tv/film. As do the Grace, Vera, Morse books etc
Lynibis I saw a trailer for it at my mother's house and thought to myself why on earth are the BBC making a production of that story again. Why not write something new and fresh. I don't have a TV license so its not my money but even so the BBC are utterly clueless which is why so many don't watch it nowadays and pay for entertainment from Netflix and other sources.
