Food or Drink Products That Aren't as Good as They Used to Be
Ask a Question
Hello all.
I decided to treat myself to a pack of Jammie Dodgers the other day for the first time in years. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement as there was hardly any jam in them. The chocolate ones are the same with a very thin layer of a low quality chocolate filling. Such a shame as Jammie Dodgers were a childhood favourite of mine.
Another one is the Fray Bentos pies. Barely any meat in them nowadays.
Are there any foods or drinks that you used to enjoy but you don't so much now?
Many years ago Marks and Spencers used to a do a Cannelloni which came in a foil tray and it was as good as any restaurant but sadly they haven't done it for years. Iceland used to a do a tin of hot chicken curry and used to love that but again the product disappeared and there was no replacement as nowadays they just seem to sell other brands with not much in the way of Iceland brand tinned goods.
It's crazy most foods have shrunk and continue to shrink as well as the price going up and up.
There are a lot of foods that have changed over the years. It could b to do with them 'improving' the recipe or just trying and failing to make them healthier?? I wish they would stop messing about with them as clearly if they were selling well before it is because we all liked it. There are a great many products, particularly sweets/chocolates, that I won't buy any more because they replaced the sugar with a sweetener (usually sweeteners are really bad for you) and it changes the taste and appeal completely.
Definitely the latter. At first I thought it was just my taste buds getting old but more and more I suspect cutting back of ingredients as everything tastes so bland these days. Along with shrinkage and less fillings etc there are many things I no longer buy.
I really believe parents need to teach cookery to their children if they want to eat decent food.
Yes it has declined. What we do sometimes is buy iced buns, slice in half and add our own jam to it. Just enhances as you can’t buy much any more. You could add jam to your biscuits. Shouldn’t have to but it’s the way it is.
Fish and chips has gone down the pan since shrinkflation. The last time I ordered Cod I am pretty sure it was not actually cod and it was a slice rather than half or a whole piece. They also had the cheek to charge more for less.
Heinz baked beans. It used to be way better than it is now, so since they dropped in quality I don't mind buying cheap store brands.
The only Heinz product I still buy is their ketchup. I've yet to find one that surpasses them in that regard.
PhilipMarc Heinz baked beans used to be our favourite when I was growing, but we all have the Aldi baked beans now.
Cream eggs is the well known one, when kraft (i think) took over Cadbury’s they changed the oil used. I didn’t think i would be able to notice the difference but i definitely coule
Wagon wheels, toblerone are not as I remember. I recently bought a tin of ravioli in tomato sauce thinking it would be a childhood reminder. Yuk, so sweet and not very nice at all.
RegularComper91 absolutely agree with you you . And they hardly have any filling now
Funny you should mention this as well as jammie Dodgers, I got a pack from Asda and they was awful, jam tasted weird, I opt for Aldi ones now much better
A lot of the recipes for snacks that I used to enjoy as a kid seems to have changed, as I don’t enjoy them as much. Same goes for ice cream
