I rarely waste food, in fact I think I almost going into a state of mourning if I've bought something which I haven't eaten as its gone off. I honesty can't remember the last food I've thrown out. Unlike my cat's food which he is always losing interest in and I'm throwing out.

kitty88uk He is called Conker and he looks almost identical to the famous youtube cat 'Owlkitty' except he is male rather than female. He makes similar although not the same chirpy sounds.

kitty88uk Are you in the horrors?

I throw a load of food away every week, especially milk and bread.

TheChimp what do you mean horrors? Every week? That’s a lot of foods, does the bread get mouldy? Milk is still drinkable if it has not gone off

kitty88uk We keep bread and milk until it goes smelly, but it has to be thrown in the end.

It's the pricing that does my head in. We bought milk in B&M yesterday and it was the same price for both 4 and 2l bottles. Doesn't make sense.

And as for bread, an 800g loaf of the bread we like is only 15p more expensive than the 400g one, so we buy the big one and feed the waste to the birds.

TheChimp You could make bread and butter pudding to use up those ingredients, or freeze some. I know someone who freezes a loaf into 2 slices, bags as they live alone. They also batch cook, so have meals to hand kitty88uk a good use for the take away containers

I hate food waste too. There is rarely any food waste in our house. If something is close to its use by date and I know we won't eat it before then I will freeze it. We will eat any leftovers the next day. Throwing away food is throwing away money.

MrsCraig that’s great well done 👍🏻 we always eat leftover foods from dinner the next day! Nothing goes to waste when it comes to fresh foods like meat 🍖 and chicken 🍗

Omg exactly!! Food is money!!

Pfft the amount of foods not eaten and expired still sat on shelves or eventually thrown away is a damn huge waste of money!!!!!

MrsCraig I am exactly the same as you. All that goes in our food waste bin is fruit skins and bones. My husband came from a large family of 9 people in the household, nothing went to waste and we have carried that on. If we can freeze it we will if it’s close to date.

kitty88uk we don't let anything go to waste in our house. Especially fresh food. We utilise our freezer as much as we can. There is so much wasted food, it is very sad.

MrsCraig I've read your posts for a while and I'm a bit worried tbh. Are you just short of money or just tight? It's not a personal attack, but I don't get how you can live like you do.

I learnt that buying cheap wasn't always the best option.

Are you working btw?

TheChimp I am a teacher, I work part time. My husband is also a teacher and works full time. I'm just tight. I will do everything I can to save money so that I know there is money in the bank for when there is an emergency. I don't always buy cheap. I will invest in white goods as they are used a lot but I will buy my sons clothes 2nd hand because he grows out of them so fast.

I am careful with money, I always have been. My son doesn't go hungry or cold and he doesn't go without. I would rather spend £2 on a toy car that brings him joy than a bar of chocolate for me. I prioritise where our money goes.

eyeballkerry our food waste bin is the same. Although I have occasionally used the pototo and carrot peelings and made crisps with them in the airfryer. Just to try something different. My parents and my husbands mum were the same. Nothing went to waste, they still do it to this day and we do it too.

MrsCraig I get what you're saying.

We used to have one bottle of pop to share, one packet of crisps and a chocolate bar once a week with the big shop.

TheChimp I don't like wasting money, so will save it where I can. If I don't need to spend it then I won't. I will also use the vouchers I get from surveys to pay for Christmas so that money can be saved and used elsewhere.

We are good and have hardly any food waste, if there's something in the fridge I think we won't get around to eating I will freeze it. I also lightly meal plan so think that works well too.

I'm sure your family had good intentions. Maybe if they checked use by dates next time some of it could be donated to local food banks, frozen for later use or used up in recipes or what we used to call bit of this bit of that dinners. My daughter used to love the latter as dinner would consist of using up whatever was getting close to it's sell by date and it was a help yourself buffet.

I agree it does frustrate me a lot as well. It’s sad that people are starving then so much food goes in the bin. I do try to monitor my food usage to ensure that i don’t waste much.

I don't throw anything away unless it is off i.e.mouldy or smelly.I check the fridge every morning and plan meals from left overs first and when all are gone, I see what I have of interest in the freezer.I quite enjoy creating meals from left overs which can sometimes be quite interesting!

Food waste has always been a pet hate. Freeze it, share it, drop it round to an old or disabled person that you know etc etc. but what has made you suddenly become so angry about it. Reading your words its like i can almost see the expression on your face! I never have any food waste i have 11 grandchildren instead! X
