Will A Fried Breakfast Kill Me?
In the News
Doctor has ordered me to stop eating fried breakfast before work. But then I read that to live longer eating an oatmeal breakie. I have a manual labour job and feel I need the fry up to get going and last the day. But am I just making excuses?
Anyone making this decision got any thoughts please?
A fried breakfast is good in moderation
Same as everything else I'd try the oatmeal a few days a week first
You could alternate between them and also go with Naked bacon which doesn't contain the dangerous nitrates of most bacon. Can you get on with vegetarian sausages as they can be a lot healthier. Use extra virgin olive oil to cook your fry up rather than seed oils which can be more dangerous.
Think of the oatmeal breakie as a sort of cleanse so you have that every third morning to reduce cholesterol where as a full English increases it.
BonzoBanana Virgin Olive Oil is fantastically healthy B, but scientists say it can be harmful if heated to high temperatures
Heres a snippet from the article below
Is olive oil good for cooking?
Many experts believe that exposure to high heat changes the intrinsic properties of fats and oils. Olive oil especially has a low smoke point, between 365-420 F. Smoking point refers to the point at which an oil begins to produce smoke. When you heat olive oil to its smoke point, useful compounds such as polyphenols get transformed into potentially harmful compounds.
While olive oil may not be an ideal cooking oil for frying at high temperatures, it can still be used for cooking at lower temperatures so that the nutrient content is preserved.
telmel I've seen that information before but must admit I'm not sure about the temperature bit. I don't cook at temperatures where the oil smokes. I've just looked online and a full english should be cooked at around 110 degrees Celsius which works out at 230 degrees farenheit which is some way off the temperature warning and there is an inherent health risk with all seed oils at any temperature. Looks like up to 180 degrees Celsius is fine for extra virgin olive oil but 200 degrees would be into the danger zone. I'll try to remember to keep to a maximum of 180 degrees when using my air fryer. Occasionally I do fresh chips from potatoes and then coat them in oil before putting them in the chip drum (its what I call it) that came with my air fryer.
I think you are making excuses because it is common knowledge that a fry up is not good if eaten regularly. It used to just be a Sunday morning treat.
You don't have to fry, you can grill and have scrambled or boiled/poached egg on toast with grilled lean bacon or Turkey rashers. Add some grilled tomatoes and mushrooms and fat content is lowered significantly.
In short, fried food is known to increase risk of disease. If you want something to last the day, eat foods that promote fullness (slow release foods). For example, jumbo oats (cook in water on the hob) with grated apple (or banana slices) and a few nutrient rich seeds (like pumpkin or hemp seeds). If you need an energy boost during work, try a boiled egg and some spinach (healthy protein and nutrients)
I think moderation is the key, doctors always tell you not to do certain things, I was told to stop eating fried food, I still eat them but not as much
I don’t think it’s good to have every day. Once or twice a week maybe. Grilled is better than fried. Otherwise eat porridge for slow release energy. Scrambled eggs on toast.
I have just been on holiday and had a fried breakfast nearly every morning. But now I’m back home it’s back to cereal. I personally couldn’t eat one every day. But I agree it should be in moderation. Have you tried eggs Benedict? I find them filling and should be better for you.
eyeballkerry .I always eat a cooked Breakfast on Holiday BUT walk miles,I eat Fruit & Yogurt or Fruit & Fibre once home...
janphoenix51 I was really good on holiday, every morning I went to gym for about an hour and then swimming. I wish I could do this every day but it’s just not convenient and expensive. I do a lot of walking every day.
I have porridge nearly every day , i just put ten tablespoons of oats in a large glass ovenproof bowl , add milk and microwave for 3 and a half minutes on full power
So easy and cheap to buy and make , it keeps me full all day until my next meal in the evening and i categorically believe i am healthier because of this regime
I do add a dollop of honey or jam to it to make it less bland or you can add sliced banana or similar
But i agree the odd full english will not harm, especially if you just fry the egg and do the sausage and bacon in an airfryer for example
Jerseydrew...I hardly eat Fried food but on holiday I fill up on a nice Full English Breakfast with Fresh Orange Juice & Coffee. I walk it off later but this keeps me going til late Afternoon.
I have a sweet tooth but I believe in & go by the mantra..
Everything In Moderation...
janphoenix51 holidays I binge on a fry up. I do love them but don't eat them at home
The only time I have a cooked breakfast is when i'm on holiday at a B & B in this country, other than that I don't cook one for myself. May be time for you to start trying some other options.
HEDGEHOGS Gonna try telmel's advice in a week or two. Just gonna unduge in fry-ups until then
