Are Garden Centre Plants Better than the Supermarkets?

Ask a Question

Are Garden Centre Plants better quality than the ones you get from the Supermarkets?

My local Asda and Morrisons are overflowing with lots of beautiful bedding plants and shrubs for a fraction of the price of Garden centres, but, someone recently said to me that the garden centre ones are grown better? Is that a thing?

I think it depends how the staff looking them. I have been to a supermarket and a garden center and seen plants that are desperately in need of some TLC. Supermarkets are generally cheaper and closer to home.

clicker2 Definitely much cheaper at the supermarkets! I bought a house with a lot of planting space and it's too expensive to buy everything from the garden centre (though I have bought a few)

I don't think so as long as you get fresh plants from the supermarket before they have neglected them , but supermarkets only have a limited range of plants, whereas a Garden centre has a much wider choice and some different unique plants and ideas that you can't get in your local supermarket.

If the garden centre has propagated the plants themselves then the plants are definitely better quality.

I think garden centre plants are of a much better quality, the supermarkets around me have lots of summer bedding plants, when their first in the shop their fine but then their just left to wilt as the staff are not allowed to water them due to health and safety.

Much depends. They start out well in the supermarkets and are generally better priced but sadly staff are not trained gardeners so they often get neglected. In garden centres they tend to look after them better.

MelissaLee1 I think this sounds about right. But if you get them before staff start looking after them I think you get a much better deal than garden centres

I always use the council garden centre plants are generally 3 times bigger than in supermarkets. looked at plants in supermarkets and most of the time they are dried out.

From experience I've found that in general the supermarkets don't look after them as well as Garden Centres particularly from the watering point of view
