Are Garden Centres too expensive?
I saw a Rhododendron for £47 in one and later that week saw them in Asda for £11!
They probably are but tbh they probably need a lot of upkeep with many overheads. They have become more than just garden stuff these days and I love browsing round them and enjoying a cream tea, can't say the same for Asda lol.
Lynibis I like browsing for other bits and have a cake in their cafes, especially the ones that have concessions. But the prices for plants are shocking sometimes.
Well i think they are expensive but also they aren’t able to provide products at as cheap a price as supermarkets.
SamGoodship yeah it is excessive but i can see how it would happen if the garden centre grows their plants in house and the supermarket imports it.
They are but nice to shop for special gifts but not generally. They are nice to look around though for something to do.
Yes they rip customers off. I get they need to make profit but the prices are just so inflated
Depends on what you are looking for at the garden centre. Somethings are a rip off others are good value
Some garden centres are notoriously expensive. Best to seek out more independent businesses and save money and support ‘local’
Yes they are expensive , but from a business point of view they only make their money throughout the summer months so like many holiday companies or motorway services for instance, make money whilst they can to carry them through the quieter periods, as they still have their overheads and bills to pay at all year.
Yes they have got really expensive for plants as currently shopping around to have a revamp in the garden and they seem to be a lot more focused around dinin/cream teas these days as the cafes have got so much bigger and vey popular.
I was visiting one the other day. Lovely place to wander around but very expensive. It’s great to get ideas and find the products cheaper online
Yes! We bought a cat solar light last year £12.99 and in Aldi last week exactly the same for £6.99.
kimcress I see this kind of thing happening all the time. I find Homebase (hopefully the Latestdeals moderators/police dont mind me naming them) do this a lot. I saw a collection of indoor plants for around £30 but the same ones were just £12 at a local store.
PaxAmerica it’s shocking isn’t it. Don’t mind if it’s quirky one off pieces but to get the same in a cheaper store is crazy.
Some are. The one where we live is fabulous value for money, often cheaper than the offers online!
Garden centres are the equivalent of convenient stores for wanna be gardeners. If you haven't much idea of what you want or what a healthy plant should look like and money isn't a problem they can be really useful. For those in the know try a local grower who sells their own plants. Older gardener's tend to have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Through word of mouth or 'plants for sale' signs these are the jewels in the crown go to places when it comes to buying plants.
