George Formby Was Banned by the BBC for Being Too "Provocative" but...

Other

Jimmy Savile was perfectly fine, huh? Even after death Savile is still unpunished.

I've personally been watching Mr. Formby's movies and really enjoying them a lot, and the songs he sang, too. So much so I ordered the "Ultimate Collection" 2CD set of his from MusicMagpie for £1.99 to hear them in high quality.

This song is pretty catchy:

The Brits have no idea what a legend they had, I wish I could have met him in person, but he died young at about the age of 57.

RIP, Mr. Formby.

Things change as time goes on, Elvis was outrageous, cause of his hip movement, in the 60s and they would only film him from the waist up. Now in 2024 musical artists are way more obscene than that. Formby did have a lot of innuendo in his songs. As for Saville, the less said about him the better I think, what happened with him is nothing short of a national disgrace.

I loved your second sentence.....not sure how you can punish someone when they are dead!

But yes I used to listen to and see George Formby when I was a child. I was too young to know if it was provocative. I particularly liked Leaning on a Lamp Post.

The publicity of being banned most likely did his career the world of good. There were lots of extremely cheeky songs in the 1920s, my grandad loved them. I wish the BBC would realise that they are not God and if people don't like it they don't have to watch or listen - a little thing called choice.
