Whats the Last Thing You Expect to Find in Your Bird Feeder , Not This !!

Ask a Question

You don´t mind the birds using your feeder , thats what they are there for, or even the odd cheeky squirrel

But you would not expect to find a giant rat stuck head first in one , even if he was feeling a bit peckish

It was so wedged in she had to help get it out, not something i would relish

Its the first time i have heard of this happening , they must be getting desperate for food

I can hear Bob Geldof now belting out ´rat trap´

Have you had any unwanted visitors in yours ?

The video wouldn't load for me but the image it looks quite big. I wonder if it's another of those african pouched rats that do turn up in the UK from time to time.

Pjran It's big but I think the photo has been done to make it look bigger with both rat and man in focus and the angled pickup stick shows the rat is much more in the foreground than the man. I think they are typically about 3 foot long but with the tail length which is slightly longer than the body. People from Africa brought them over as they like to eat them and a few escaped etc and some managed to survive so they are in the UK but only make up a tiny percentage of rats overall. A bit too big to hide away compared to most rats but places like London have so many sewers and hidden rivers etc to make it easy for them to survive. The biggest examples can be the same weight as a an average weight cat.

We had rats in garden many years ago as we had chickens, we have neither now. Our bird feeder attracts a lot of very big birds. It is one we can video and watch indoors, very entertaining.

telmel It is funny when the cats go near to it as you can ‘talk’ to the bird feeder and the cats haven’t a clue why they can hear your voice but not see you.

Wow I'm rather glad I've never seen a rat on or anywhere near my bird feeder. I get all sorts in my garden thought, badgers, foxes and the squirrels are permanent residents in the Oak tree at the back of the garden. Don't worry it's a squirrel feeder, no rats in sight. Image
