Have You Been to Gibraltar?
Ask a Question
Gibraltar being a British territory in land that belongs to Spain has made me interested visiting sometime in the future.
They apparently use the Pound Sterling and their own Gibraltar Pound, according to Wiki. Why not just the traditional Pound Sterling, then?
No I have not been but It Is on my bucket list to do. I do know there are British Shops there too. One day.
It’s not a holiday destination I’ve ever thought of though have been looking at different holidays for later in year but no idea where I’d like to go. Did go to Portugal last yr and must say it was 1 of best places I’ve ever been, toss up between there and Rome. Definitely 2 places I’d like to return to in future. Any places u can recommend
Pfs The answer appears to be yes, but do your own research.
One of my Grandfathers was from La Linea in Spain so when I went I stood on the border.Another time I went across. Not really the most exciting of places although I did meet some nice people in a bar there when I was in my twenties.
Yes I’ve been a couple of times, just port days on cruises. Visiting the caves is recommended and avoid the monkeys.
Yes, I had a enjoyable holiday in Gibraltar. A Barbary macaque randomly jumped onto me and held my arm for a few seconds when I was walking up the Rock of Gibraltar - you can use the cable car if you prefer. They close the main road every time an aircraft lands at the airport. I didn't experience any issues crossing the border into Spain. There is also the option of catching a ferry from Algeciras to Morocco.
I have visited, just for a few hours from a cruise, we were fairly herded so only saw what they wanted us to see. Mr T had been many times before and said it had increased considerably in size! Not sure I want to go again. It seems odd that a supposed part of Britain is so far away
yes I’ve been several times, I love it stayed at the caleta palace hotel, the main town n shops is only a small bus ride away and you can cross the border over into Spain - I loved the place however it was 30 yrs ago
Love love love Gibraltar! Enjoyed it when we went which was about 8 years ago. Lovely place and definitely on my list to return when I can
Stay in la linea de la concepcion and walk across. It's much cheaper to stay there, Gibraltar is very expensive.
garyfilmer Never been there, but the fact they speak English and use the Pound currency has made me interested.
Considering Gibraltar isn't an island, folks can drive to this territory if they'd choose to. A road trip of sorts.
Now, as for booking a hotel room yeah... That's not cheap, for example at booking.com/ 2 adults + 4 days comes to a total of £330ish. I'd just want a simple room, nothing fancy.
PhilipMarc I rented Apartmentos vista a tres continentes, £55 a night. Lovely little apartment with amazing views of Gibraltar, definitely recommend. 20 minutes stroll to the border.
PhilipMarc Be careful P, the Gibralter pound is not the same as the UK pound, you can use pound sterling there but you cannot take gibralter pounds home with you to spend in the UK
Also be aware of the barbary apes, i had one jump on my back in the 80s and had its claws dig into my flesh, my own fault for eating food in front of it
The second time i went a few years ago a tourist guide placed a tame one on my shoulders for a photo, that wasn't so painful
I’ve wanted to go to see the monkeys there for many years but not made it yet. I think the gibraltar pound can be used in the uk and vice versa
Yes went a few years ago as a day trip from a Spanish holiday. Don't remember what money I used but it was an experience! We got cable car up the rock and walked down. Extremely crowded and busy with houses clinging to the rock and on top of each other. Wasn’t as pleasant as I’d dreamt it would be but not an awful place. Would go again but too many people in a small place for me to consider living! No issues with border, we left our Spanish hire car and walked across the runway to the town. The apes tried to steal the bags from under the pushchair and saw one grab an entire Magnum ice cream from a woman!
I’ve been for the day (on a cruise!) and I have a friend that lives there. It’s really lovely and there are loads of taxi companies that take you up round the rock - there’s some stunning scenery and at Michael’s cave. I’m not sure what it would be like to go for a longer holiday, but it is definitely worth a visit!
My friends daughter has some health issues and they have to come to mainland uk to be treated in our hospitals.
We drive over to Gibraltar when visiting Spain. Perfume and alcohol are particularly cheap as the tax is very low. I always buy my favourite perfume and Smirnoff vodka that was £7.99 for 1 litre last December. I also bought some Hotel Chocolate in their shop there. Although the price was the same as the UK.
Yes I’ve called at Gibraltar a few times when we’ve been cruising. We liked it so much that we decided to have a break there. The weather was always good and our Hotel (The Elliot) wasn’t expensive though everything there was satisfactory. I loved the British shops (Morrisons, Mothercare & Marks & Spencer’s), and the prices of spirits, various rums for example were very good. Plenty of nice bars, cafes and restaurants and a docked Cruise Ship (Seabourn), a yacht that you could stay on which we always said we would come back and try (though that was 8 years ago and we haven’t made it back) but that’s because of The Covid Pandemic and as we’ve grown older we are less mobile. But I can recommend it as everyone was friendly (a Lot of ex-Pats, some running pubs or bars). The Churros was the best I’d ever tasted around that time, though I can’t remember the name of the Place we had it from.
Yes, i was there. It is a bit of a one horse town, but nice area. They have a Morrisons if you feel that you are missing the UK.
It is worth a trip up the rock, but don't feed the apes! Lovely views from the Top.
I have never been, but I did sail past it in the dark and saw lights in the distance. It is a place I would like to visit one day.
We visited Gibraltar on a cruise. We went in a Land Rover up to the top of the rock and did the tour. We were told the history of Gibraltar and how important it was during WW2 being able to see what was going in and out of the Med. There is a nice pub with seating outside. Just one road to walk down and back. Good views of airport. There are a few shops too. The apes will take your necklace off your neck or anything they can grab. They are not friendly and smell.
Don’t go near the apes.
Yes it's a great visit. Do not snack in the street as that is what attracts the monkeys mostly. Nice to see them though
Yes I've been several times on Cruise stops for a day or half-day. Usually very good hot weather, good shopping. Depending on time of year very crowded in centre. Not too much to see so wouldn't think a full week's holiday is justified apart from sunbathing!
