Is Going to Bed at 9pm the Secret to Happiness?
Ask a Question
according to the Wall Street Journal, 9pm is the hot new bedtime – not for middle-aged tired people, but for twentysomethings. The young people of today, it seems, are taking control over their sleep routines and prioritising shuteye over fun. A 2022 analysis found that Americans in their 20s were getting, on average, nine hours and 28 minutes of sleep a night, up from eight hours and 47 minutes in 2010
The truth is that some people – young and old – will naturally want to go bed early, while some will naturally sleep for more than nine hours
How many hours sleep do you think is enough ? Would you contemplate going to bed at 9pm?
Aenurse1 I couldn't stand still at 26.I used to play guitar in pubs and clubs at night as well as my day job so sometimes I would just be going out then! but then they probably get up at 5 or 6am or some such.
MelissaLee1 I was like that till I was 25 and had my first child before that was out every night working and getting home about 4 am
Seldom in bed before midnight often 1am sometimes even later even when I have to get up early. My problem is eating late at night.Always been a late night person. When I was younger I often went to work after 4/5 hrs sleep and occassionaly none!
Aenurse1 I'm still creeping slowly towards the bedroom at midnight.Every so often I get mad tired and retire at 11pm but not very often. My problem is about 4pm in the afternoon I'm usually flagging ,talking jibberish and craving jelly beans or jaffa cakes.
Ideally 8 hours but rarely the case. I don’t go up until midnight and am often up between 5 and 7 for work.
I tend to go to bed by about 10pm, i find i’m a lot more productive in the mornings so like to be up early to get stuff done or go to work
My granddaughter goes to bed around 9pm, especially when she was teaching, but now her new baby has settled down by 9pm and sleeps all night she still sleeps about the same time. I, on the other hand, go to bed about 11.30 to 12.30 and get up around 7.30 to 8.30, but I read for between 30 to 60 minutes.
I usually in for bed around half 11 and I get up between 6:45-7:20am. 8 hours is my ideal sleep time.
I go to sleep about 10 pm but wake up around 4 am when I read or watch the sky lighten and the sun rise about 6 ish.I need about 6 hours sleep to function during the next day.I am a busy 76 year old!
It really depends on how tired you are. If you have a lot of energy etc, burn it off and make yourself tired. Then at least when you go to bed no matter the time, you know you'll sleep and not lie tossing and turning.
I get between 6 and 12 hours of sleep mostly around 8 hours but I have a cat who likes to wake me up for attention and starts nuzzling me sometimes around 3am when he fancies going out. I love to sleep on when I can. Left to my own devices I probably wouldn't get up before 11am although I'd wake up with a very annoyed cat next to me.
My sleep is all over the place, I was so tired tonight that I went to bed at 10.30 and here I am again at 01.30 because I couldn't get to sleep, I go through spats of not sleeping but usually go to bed anytime between 10.30 and 12.30.
