Should the Govenrment Contribute towards Weddings?
Ask a Question
How much did your wedding cost?
Couples could get up to £550 under new government proposals towards their wedding.
How ridiculous! This would be a total waste of taxpayers money..
Being lonely has nothing to do with getting married and it worries me that the government are trying to connect the two things.
No the Government shouldn't be contributing towards your wedding. We had a simple wedding, one that we could afford. We were lucky because my parents helped but even then we didn't have a big, extravagant day. If you decide to get married then you should pay for the wedding. Weddings don't need to be big, fancy affairs that cost a fortune. Your wedding is one day, it is your marriage you put the time and effort in to.
They can be expensive but we saved up and got what we wanted. We didn’t have a lavish one and no evening reception but a really nice wedding. I don’t think giving money for this reason is a good idea.
You don’t need to get married to not be lonely? Me and my partner have been together for 9 years, getting married wouldn’t mean a thing. We changed our names via deed pole. So no the government doesn’t need to start contributing to weddings that you are choosing to have.
What exactly is the reasoning behind this proposal? Seems a bit ridiculous if you ask me and i highly doubt it will happen
No what a waste of tax payers money. You want to get married you pay for it. Why should tax payers. Ridiculous
Of course not either just pop to the local registry office and get married with out all the frills and fuss or alternatively just live together without getting married.
Of course it isn't and I dont think anyone is seriously expecting this to be conservative policy.
No. Why should we have to pay for other peoples' weddings? If you want something, you save up and buy it yourself.
This is completely barmy. If you want to get married then pay for it yourself. Weddings can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. More people seem to having two weddings these days, even more barmy.
What a ludicrous idea ! Are you sure this wasn’t printed a bit late and should have been printed on 1st April ? We have homeless people- kids living in hostels etc. if anything a program ought to be worked out where any excess food gets taken to a hostel or a shelter.
What!!!! I don’t think I’ve heard anything so absurd or stupid in a long while. Why pay £550 towards a wedding? Surely if u want to get married it should be something both bride and groom can afford either by themselves or with the help of family (if they can afford to do so). I’d the big wedding, the big dress etc and my husband and I saved to pay for it. He wouldn’t let my parents pay (though they paid for r cars, photographer and evening reception) he said they didn’t ask us to get married, it was r idea so r responsibility. My youngest daughter got married in Italy 8yrs ago and her husband and her saved to pay for it though we bought her dress and gave them money towards the wedding also. Her husband was off same mind, its r wedding and r responsibility also
It'll just be a general election bribe, that won't happen. Not only that, it's in the Daily Fail rag, so that's a definite no, absolute nonesense
My wedding cost a couple of thousand, we paid for it all. It was a year's overtime. I didn't even take any money from family. What a complete waste of tax payers £, you don't need to be married to be together and it doesn't have to be a big deal.
It's down to the couple of they decide to get married. I've even said to my son I won't give a penny towards a wedding. But I would help with a deposit for a house/flat.
The time it takes to save up for a wedding demonstrates your commitment to it. The most extravagant wedding I went to where the parents paid for everything didn't even last a year
Wow we already know what a waste of space these idiots MP’s are make diabolical decisions
Wow. proving themselves top of the class again on how to waste tax payers money.
The country is being run by idiots. Put the money into the nhs or police where it is needed.
No,,, for god sake this country is getting worse,, we have people living on the street, pensioners who can’t pay their bills, yet we want to give people money to get married,,
What an absolute waste of taxpayers' money! Maybe this could instead be spent on our NHS or military.
No absolutely not.People have to get their priorities in place. We had a budget wedding. Our first priority was somewhere to live.We did not expect anyone else to pay.The government should be helping In other ways like encouraging people to save and perhaps giving bonuses according to their savings.
Is it April the 1st ? What a ridiculous article from the Daily Mail. The Government keep threatening to rein in on their spending for much more important things due to the supposed climate of today so why waste it on weddings? Won't this just encourage scammers getting married for the cash?
Don’t know about weddings now days in all honesty how long do they last these days . Be better spent on looking after these poor kids living with their drunk and drugged up parents . Kids end up doing the same and getting violent . Clean up the violence and child abuse would be my priority. There our future.
No u can just get married quietly and saves any hassle. Not everyone want big wedding. There is far more the money should be used for. Everyone wants government to pay for everything these days.
Absolutely stupid idea as there are much better things that our money could be put towards, a wedding is your choice.
Weddings alone, no, but if they'd require couples to have 2-3 children, then yes to boost the fertility rate.
PhilipMarc Are you really serious??? Regarding expanding the population!!! Where are the houses, schools, extra child benefits coming from? The country is already overpopulated!!!
No, why should they, if you want to get married you pay to it. Basic cost can be as low as £138 for Register Office with just 2 witnesses, oops they wouldn't get the boozy party.
