DIY Haircuts: Success Stories or Disasters?
Ask a Question
Has anyone tried cutting their own hair lol or have their family members cut it for them?
Or knows someone who is a hairdresser ?
I have been going to one for years and get discount but my hair always ends up too short lol I get annoyed at the length when I said not above shoulders but then I get over it soon
I was volunteering so got my hair cut free perfect for me as I have it short now I do pay something for there time
I usually just go to a salon when they have people training, often they are over looked by someone who is experienced, they have often had years of practicing or training, they just need to finish their training. I've had some of the best cuts from these meetings. It is often free too, although I often give them a small amount and am always appreciative.
kitty88uk Usually around £2-£10 more than not £5 but it isn't necessary, but I think it is nice to if you can. As even hairdressers than come to your house is usually a minimum of £25 here and that is a wet cut. If you go to a salon you are looking at £30-£70 just for a cut these days
The only downside to going to a trainee is it might take a little longer, but it's worth it for me.
I had it dyed once with a trainee too, you only have to pay for the products used, think it was around £16 - which I know you are usually paying for their skills and time, but a dye in a salon is £60-£100+ usually, so they must add a fair bit on top. (I usually just home dye it and look for offers like 2 for £9 )
It's worth phoning local salons, they don't always advertise it, some colleges offer this too, but I'm not sure if there is a charge, I know there was a small charge when I studied beauty, depending on the treatment.
there was a time I did my own, when I had a grade 2 all over it was fairly easy. I then went over two years hair cut free so that needed a professional to rid me of the cave man look. Back to an annual hair cut these days so pay for it.
didbygraham haha cave man look! Yeah I have not had a haircut since start of October 2022! My hair is medium length long and I’ve noticed it’s growing slower than before
I hadn’t been to the hairdressers for years, I have had so many haircuts go wrong. But last week while I was on a cruise I treated myself to a haircut. Fantastic hair wash before the cut and was very happy with the cut.
eyeballkerry oh no sorry to hear that you had so many bad haircuts!! Did you pay a lot for them too?
I just dislike the fact my hair gets touched lol and for once I have not been since 2022 as I noticed hair is growing slower lol
kitty88uk I can’t remember how much I paid as it was so long ago. I just want to find a hairdresser who will listen and knows what to do.
I'm not a hairdresser but l have a fringe and always trim it myself, l use to cut & colour my mum's and my brother use to have a two going into a one monthly too. I now just do my boss who has a zero all over.
I have really long hair. When it gets a bit too long and the ends are abit frizzy I just trimm it myself. I have Agoraphobia so couldn't cope with going to hairdresser. Plus I don't like people touching my hair.
KAW18 I see yeah I’m tempted to just trim the ends too annoying how I’ve got split ends too! oh sorry to hear that! Omg I’m the same I dislike someone else touching my hair but ignore it lol as when I get home I wash hair anyways
Have to have haircut once a year but I have not had one since 2022 as my hair is growing slower lol it’s medium length now I usually get it cut when it’s grown longer and reaches further down my back
Timely.Having my hair cut at a posh salon tomorrow for £10 as a model.I have cut my own hair a couple of times in the past and once it came out quite good but I'm not as brave or as daring as I used to be lol.
MelissaLee1 wow that’s cheap! I get mine cut for £13 or was it £15 I can’t remember lol my mum knows the guy so she goes with me and we both get discounts
kitty88uk Its about three inches shorter now.I was starting to look like the wicked witch of the east lol.I look half respectable again Thank God.
MelissaLee1 lmao what a great way to describe yourself with messy hair before
Yeah having haircut it’s lighter and easier to wash and makes you look younger too
My mum used to do my hair but I've been managing it myself for decades. Refuse to pay for a hairdresser
I cut my husband's hair, my son's hair and my own hair. Hudband hasn't been to the hairdressers for 4 years, son has never been and I haven't been for 8 years.
I used to go to a salon and pay their extortionate fees until my hair was cut by a junior but still charged full price. In protest I bought some good scissors and started trimming my hair, simple bob shape. Eventually I persuaded my husband to tidy the back. Last time I went to the salon it was near£50 and that was before the energy price hikes.
I got my hair cut at a college where they do gents and ladies hair cuts near me a couple of weeks ago. The girl done a really good job and it only cost me £5. I will definitely go back as it’s local and the girls were friendly.
Yes I've. Cut my own hair in the past but I messed it up so now days I get my partner to cut it for me each time she cuts my hair always get people say how good it looks she even cuts our daughter's hair and friends hair she's now thinking of taking it up full time
I stopped going to the hairdresser because they were shut in the covid period and got a Wahl trimmer and quite happy with the basic hair cut that provides so don't need to go to the hairdresser anymore. I think it was about £10 a time and I went maybe every couple of months so probably saved £150-200 now. A significant chunk of money.
I’m lucky my sister is a hairdresser and my cousin is a barber so my hair is cut or coloured how I want it
I always cut my own as it is easier for me to get the look that I want so that it is short and manageable.I have not been to the hairdresser for 15 years as I don’t like leaning back or forward into the sink as it hurts my neck.I wash my hair in the shower which is a better upright position.
The only bit I would dare to try and cut myself is my fringe. Even then my hairdresser keeps telling me off as he can see I do a bad job and he has always offered to do it free if I am passing. He has done my hair for 30+ years and I wouldn't trust anyone else.
I have been cutting my own hair for 12 years now. I think I've now saved over £2,000 on hair cuts! (£15 x 12 months x 12 years). I just have a buzz cut all over.
Yup I started during lockdown not gone back to a hairdressers yet. My cousin is a hairdresser. I just cut it when i feel like
I cut mine through 2020 but like many people realised that it's a skill I do not have, I'd cut my fringe a tiny bit now but no more. It's too mood altering to walk around with a lousy hair do.
I haven't been near a hairdressers since the first day we got locked down covid wise. I had an appointment that day, that obviously couldn't happen, so I bought myself clippers and I've been doing it myself ever since
