Health Expert Issue Warning Using Plastic Bottles Can Increase Diabetes Risk

In the News

The planet is battling with plastics at the moment with micro plastic pollution in our rivers and waters , killing marine life and more recently it is being found in our drinking water and being absorbed in our bodies

Now researchers have found that the chemicals that are coming off plastic bottles can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes

Studies have found the chemical BPA that is used to make food and drink packages, that includes plastic water bottles, reduces sensitivity to the hormone insulin which regulates the body’s sugar metabolism.

I think it is about time governments forced manufacturers to revert back to glass

Ok it is heavier to transport meaning higher costs , but what would you rather have, plastic that is polluting the planet and is slowly killing us , or glass that is totally and easily recycleable ?

It was Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented the first form of plastic called bakelite in 1907 and it snowballed from there

Sometimes science can do us more harm than good

I try not to use plastic bottles. I hate how drinks taste from plastic bottles. You get plastic mouth. I prefer metal bottles. I try and use my reusable bottles which are metal.

I thought most UK regulated bottles were BPA free now anyway?

Although I just searched it and it looks like the 'substitute' they use is suppose to be just as harmful.

This is also the trouble with people buying overseas, nothing is regulated especially from the cheaper china markets. There was a very interesting programme on the other day that mentioned a certain cheap overseas site that they tested products from and the chemical value were super high, in clothes, toys etc. Nothing was regulated yet loads of people use it now. I can't mention the name as this site do sadly advertise them a fair bit.

The world and people fill the place with unhealthy foods and non recyclables - then they said you aren't drinking enough water, eating healthier - people then buy lots of bottled water as it is easier and tends to taste better (depending on where you live) they buy plastic containers to store healthier foods in and save money by keeping them in their plastic containers and also taking their own lunch in them - then they get told you are still doing it wrong, it's bad for you and the planet etc.

We are all dying to some degree, some of us have more health issues than others, not always from their own actions. Everything is being claimed to give us illness one day and then revoked or suppose to cure it the next. I'm no scientist but the stress from all these reported studies or whatnot are what are killing some of us the most.

Be sensible, live your life, be kind and thoughtful to others, yes do look after your health and yes do recycle or not use packaging where you can. But don't stress your whole life over everything you do, you need some enjoyment or what is the point? It shouldn't be up to the individual to stop this, businesses and the government already have a fair bit of input, they should use science and the knowledge. We are a very lucky country to have everything we do.

DeBunny Good analysis D , we are lucky to an extent when you look at China for instance where as you say there is no regulation

M1321 No problem M

If you have these chemicals coming from water filled bottles, imagine what is coming off the likes of coca cola bottles

We know if you pour it down the sink it is so strong it cleans it , so how strong a reaction are the chemicals in the plastic making with coke, a lot more i guess

Drinks always taste better out of glass I think whether bottle or glass.Recent science studies found mens testes full of micro plastic.

MelissaLee1 I have read similar M, in fact i think i posted something about it a short while back

Its really frightening when you already see what is happening to marine life because of micro plastic pollution

Yes I would prefer glass and sometimes I do pay more for this. Usually a ketchup bottle. Unfortunately the plastics are mass produced and that ends up being the most choice and usually a cheaper price. But I would prefer glass.

That's the problem J, price

We are all suffering austerity to some degree so always look for the cheaper option , we have no choice with food prices as they are

But as the saying goes, what price do you put on your health ?

I can see some mentioned tap water but I do remember last month Thames Water issued a warning about water not being suitable for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth. How many other places have unsuitable water and are unaware.

Another thing is that so many households still have lead pipe supply to the house, sometimes is just a small section but still. Apparently if you are in that situation then you should run your tap for few minutes (around 5 if pipe is not longer than 50m from your tap, or if more another couple of minutes longer) in the morning or if you didn't use it for a longer period to get rid of lead particles.

SebK84 I think the water treatment plants are finding it more and more difficult to clean the water S, it is so polluted now i don't think they can cope

There must be a limit to the number of times the same water can be treated and with new pollutants found in water now, ie microplastics , that the industry was never prepared for, they would probably need a complete overhaul to be able to treat this
