How Can I Groom My Long-Haired Cat Without Using Noisy Clippers?

Ask a Question

I have 5 indoor cats (please don’t judge me lol). All are short haired apart from one. He has never been a problem until recently. He would let me shampoo him , trim (well cut) his fur. Brush and comb his hair- and suddenly he is - nope you aren’t doing that anymore- I refuse to allow it. I’m going white punk and might even try dreadlocks there is nothing you can do about it !!

And he is right! He will let me brush him but not thoroughly and from the root like a long haired cat needs to be groomed.

His fur is starting to feel a bit greasy and horrid now. I have even contemplated getting clippers and give him a grade 2 all over - but he is scared of the noise - he is scared of all noises - the vacuum, my hairdryer, my phone when it rings although he does try to attack my phone.

Anyone know of a dry shampoo and a way i can shorten it without using noisy clippers?

Gosh that is an essay- sorry

5 cats great. My mum had 7 when I was growing up.One was a rescue persian white without a tail who always had clumps around his bum so he had to be 'tided up' quite a lot, especially in old age.Not the nicest job but he was sooo worth it.He was docile though and just let stuff happen to him.

MelissaLee1 my long haired used to be. He doesn’t have poo stuck to his bum - it’s just sort of greasy across his back . Think I’m going to have to get a suit of armour and go for the bath idea lol. Thank you though xx

MelissaLee1 didn’t know if talc would dry his skin out ?

For some cats, sedative medication is the most humane way to groom them comfortably. Speak to your vet for advice on the appropriate type of sedative. You can groom him at home then and have the satisfaction of being able to care for your cat. Best of luck.

EmmaWright762 has never been a problem before. I had a stern talking to him and explained he will end up with dreadlocks ! There are no knots - like when the fur gets matted - more like a teenager with greasy hair !

Thank you x

take him to see the professionals - I have a senior furball and I’ve tried doing everything at home, but there are just things I’m not going to be able to do without help

hspexy I would have to agree here. If you are unable to do it yourself then I would leave it the professionals. We have two cats, plus four kittens at the moment. One cat loves a wash where the other skins you alive. We don’t wash her anymore. Both are short haired but we were washing them to get rid of fleas. Stick to the comb now and spray.

eyeballkerry yeh it can be heart breaking seeing how anxious they get, especially as my one had recovered from a stroke over a year ago, so I am very cautious as I’d hate to trigger any other issues

I have seen where people give their long haired cats a real good cut once a year. Down to short haired cat over the body leaving like a pom pom on the tail but I’m not sure he would forgive me !

Greasy fur tells me he's got a health issue of some sort going on. I'd recommend a vet visit, especially since this is s change in his behaviour

Jinky67 he has been to the vets they wont give me sedatives and just said to be patient he is shedding his winter coat. Cost me £220 to be told that. They said it will look greasy as its his winter coat.

Jinky67 no scabs, no matts at all, just greasy fur. I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and bath him. I will stay fully clothed and get in the bath with him so hopefully he wont be as scared.

He escaped once and came home but with two matts in his fur - i sobbed my heart out !

I am prepared for it to take a long time but I don’t care. I think its the best way to go - hopefully if he is sat on my lap in the bath he will be calmer.

I would never ever let a cat of mine get scabby and matted. I can’t even watch the rspca adverts without a tear rolling down my cheeks
