Probably not under £10 but for my kids I always get new set of pyjamas each, sweets/chocolate/snacks etc, give them a small present and colouring book, pens etc for them to do activities through the day
EKWilkes89 That sounds like a great selection, activity gifts are a great idea! Thanks for sharing
No kids in family (gr8 grandson still a baby) so have never got into Xmas eve boxes, elf on the shelf etc. Are the boxes instead of stockings? If both are expected I would say it's a lot of pressure on parents with low incomes. All these things come about by someone looking to make money at our expense and parents are then trapped into yet another 'tradition'.
If this is instead of a stocking I would put what would have gone in a stocking. It's crazy kids getting all this stuff especially when prices have doubled in a year. My family are doing a £25 limit on gifts this year and that's bad enough finding something decent for that, 9 people, still over £200.
Lynibis I've never done a stocking or a box. They get enough in Christmas presents
Imnotcheap I must admit, for me a stocking was part of xmas, I used to get one but just the satsuma, a few sweets and nuts etc. And I always did one for my boys. In fact, laugh if you will, but I kept it up into their 40s and they loved it! It became more of a joke by then and has now lapsed.
Lynibis I think that's nice.
I don't remember ever having one myself. Never felt like I missed anything
We do a Christmas Eve Bag, usually new Christmas pyjamas and fluffy socks, a decorate your own gingerbread person kit, some Christmas sweets maybe chocolate coins and a game to play and maybe some novelty thing like a stretchy santa or crystal Christmas tree. Its more to keep them occupied while I am slaving away prepping in the kitchen but its a nice tradition we started for us.
Just some ideas.....
Magic Growing Crystal Christmas Tree Set £3.49
ASDA have got some pyjamas in from £3.50 so they don't have to cost a lot or get some slippers or slipper socks
Sainsbury's Diy Gingerbread Decorating Kit x5 £2.25
Tesco Design Your Own Christmas Tree Kit 316g £2.55
George Home Christmas Mini Plush £1.50
emmabeckz I like the look of the gingerbread men. Knowing my daughter she will eat the icing and sprinkles and I'll get the gingerbread men.
hellorudy949 yes we add extra sweets and mini marshmallows too. The kids squirt the icing into their mouth rather than the gingerbread!
I don't do a Christmas Eve box. He gets enough with his stocking and main presents without the added expense.
I've never done a Christmas eve box. Will do activities like gingerbread house with kids but anything would be forgotten on Christmas day
I do a Christmas Eve box for my daughter. I put in Christmas pyjamas, fluffy socks, chocolate and an activity book.
I agree it's an added expense. marketing for these things is shameless. You feel bad for saying no to your child as all their friends are receiving them. The same goes for elf on the shelf, which is growing constantly, adding more and more items that you are asked to purchase for your child. It's getting ridiculous, and don't get me started on "boo boxes"!!! .. life is tough already, especially if you're on low incomes. All that being said, my granddaughter does receive a box, and her mum is able to do extra shifts at work to cover the extra expenses.
I try and do things that are useful for the day or crafts/baking that we can do together as a family rather than gifts.
Even when my daughter's were 17, 16 and 10 they still loved me hanging their stockings on the bedroom door. I hear them all laughing together when they'd get together and compare. It always made my Christmas day.
To be honest, I have never heard of a Christmas box. When I was young, it was presents on Christmas Day whatever my parents could afford.
