How Important Do You Think Art Is?

Is art really important or not so much? I get the feeling that art scares some types of people a great deal. They just don't seem to 'get it' and so it kind of unsettles them. When a country or civilisation starts to crumble and fall it is often art which suffers first. It starts to be censored and discouraged and manipulated.
Why do some people like powerful leaders fear art and artists?
Personally I think art is very important. How do you feel about it?
I was an art student for A-level and whilst I do love it, I find it is very far removed from everyday life which is much more about making money. there are no art galleries near me so I either have to travel to london or liverpool to go to a tate gallery. This costs too much so unless there is a display going on of an artist who I love, I am priced out of it. I can't afford to buy art either unless it is a cheap print. I think art is important but it is not something that has anything to do with most people. It is very middle class and above sadly.
Like everything else it's important to people who appreciate it. Unfortunately, it's significance is usually measured by the purchase price. Which can be artificially inflated by dealers, collectors and investors.
