Jail for Shoplifters?
Ask a Question
Should people go to jail for shoplifting?
There are so many instances of shoplifting every single from big stores right down to small businesses and companies are losing money which drives up the prices for the rest of us.
If they are jailed it's only for a few months which is then reduced to weeks, they should have a 3 strikes and your out and given years, but it won't happen in this broken country
There just aren't enough jails for all shoplifters the normal approach would be to up the punishment level to deter more shoplifters. I'm in no way saying a prison is a holiday camp and its worse for the non-violent offenders who may struggle amongst very violent criminals but its not what I would call punishment if you get to read, watch tv, play sports and have 3 square meals a day. It's like homeless people who commit crime on the coldest most deadly nights just so they can get arrested and be in a warm cell with a meal rather than die on the streets. The punishment must be something most people would hate which is why I think it should be hard labour with a ball and chain on their leg. The sentence should be 1000 hours hard labour for example so its up to them how soon they get out. If they don't work they never get out and they get the most basic food.
BonzoBanana Prison will not be a deterred to some of the people who chooses to commit any kind of crime let alone shoplifting. A friend of mine used to work as a "Support Worker" and told me this type of people enjoys being a nuisance nonstop. They are all refusing any kind of support.
jam45 Obviously they can probably do that under the current system but if the punishment was much worse of course they may not act the same. There is always a percentage of the population who are basically scum with no morality and no regard for others.
I personally would have any young offenders for minor crimes forced to do national service where as those children going into jobs or higher education are excluded. 16 year old school leavers facing unemployment should also do national service.
I sort of agree with Bonzo. You/we would just be paying taxes to keep them in prison, fed with roof and facilities. Yes I agree that they should be given appropriate community service punishments according to the severity of the crime.
If we put all shoplifters in jail imagine the cost to the tax payer to arrest them process them through the courts system and actually keep them in jail. Not sure what the answer is but don't think jail is a practical solution purely from a cost point of view
It’s a hard one really because if they have jail time on their record when they come out they will be less employable and so will probably resort back to shoplifting.
No, doesn't stop people re-offending after release, possibly increases the odds of further shop lifting, and costs the tax payer around £1,000 a week to keep someone locked up, money that can be better spent elsewhere.
Our prisons dont have the space or staff. Proper community service. Cleaning the rubbish up from the sides of main roads. Shame them and have their hi vis jackets printed with ‘I’m doing this cos i got caught stealing’.
But we are far too politically correct for that lol
suevernon1968 that's a great idea. Also helping cleaning canals, graffiti, cutting back hedgerows, elderly and inform folks gardens. So much they could do to clean up the case lots most of us have to live in.
