Do You Have a Joint Bank Account?

Ask a Question

Do you think couple should have joint bank accounts?

I've never considered it really, we have always had separate ones and it works for us.

We have a joint account. We got one as soon as we married. Our wages both get paid into it and all of the bills etc come out of it. If we want to buy anything for ourselves we just tell the other one how much it costs so they know it is coming out of the account. It works for us. My parents in law are married but don't have a joint account, it works for them. I think it depends on who you are as a couple and how you handle money.

We have separate bank accounts but we do have a joint savings account as a result of reclaiming some miss sold ppi on our mortgage. We had to have a joint account to receive the money fairly.

we've never had any joint accounts. its worked out better that way for us. My wife was scammed via EBay/PayPal few years ago - we got all the money back but not before over £800 left her account. It took about 8 weeks to get the money back and in the mean time her account was frozen. If we didnt have my account it would have been really difficult as she couldnt pay any bills or anything.

We just have split the bills between us and I make the big purchases. It just works.

If you have a joint account, this needs to be for bills only.

Have your own accounts for your wages to be paid into and just filter money into the joint account.

Unfortunately I’ve seen too many friends relationships and marriages breakdown and these joint accounts do cause issues when things go wrong.

On a morbid note on death for unmarried couples, it’s more tricky to work out how much money the money is the person’s that passed and HMRC may become interested depending on values.

My husband and I have our own accounts and one joint one. I never use it, but the reason my name is on is for holiday insurance etc. I once owed my husband some money and I put it in the joint account which was quite funny.

We have a joint account and would never consider anything else.

If you don't trust your husband/wife with your money what do you trust them with?
