Is Age Just a Number? Sharing Experiences of Feeling Younger Than Your Age

Ask a Question

Why do people think age is some kind of disease? I am tired of people saying I 'look good for my age', need to 'be careful (at the gym) given my age' and younger people treating me as though I am really delicate.

I won't say how old I am but I just dont feel my age. I genuinely feel in my 20s. I am lifting more than ever, running as fast as ever and move just as nimbly. My mind is probably way sharper than when I was younger.

Is this the experience of others or am I just odd?

Good for you being fit and mobile. Just count yourself lucky as you never know what’s round the corner regardless of age.

Pjran Oh I have lots and lots of injuries, from being run over twice, a broken foot, two ruptured achilles, torn quad, herniated discs, damaged toe etc. I feel a lot of pain. Its just that I push on and feel mobile. I count my blessings every day.

That’s lovely to hear and hope you continue to feel that way . Honestly I think people just relate 20s to health and happinesses and past a certain age people as delicate but that’s not really the case . It about how your body is genetically and how you take care of it as well as many more factors . I hope young people see you as an inspiration eventually and strive to be like you. Keep up the good work!

Our neighbour is 82. He can outwalk my 34 year old husband. My parents are 73, they are probably healthier than I am! I agree that age is just a number. My parents or neighbour certainly don't look or feel their age.

Well I feel 95 in body but 18 in my head, some people look younger than they look, but others look older, my neighbour for example looks in his 70's, he's actually 56

Maybe you’re being overly sensitive and the comments are a compliment instead of an insult.

Pjran I hear that. Definetely meant that way. But it is like looking in a mirror and seeing one thing and feeling one way but people seeing the same reflection and seeming to see a totally different person. Its rather a strange feeling than a hurtful one.

My mum used to tell me off for running around, she used to tell my daughter to tell me to slow down, Mum passed away 15 years ago & I'm still running around, I'm 59 next month...

It's a bit like an old car, most are worn out and close to being scrapped but occasionally you find one which is someone's pride and joy and still working well and looking good although its taken some work to get it that way and I feel that is a bit like people's bodies. Still you can't really fight the ageing process that much. You are never going to see someone of 120 being the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, its likely after the first punch they will be zipped up in a black bag and off to the mortuary.

PaxAmerica I do wonder about whether we will get to a point where the ageing process will be conquered and then how will the world cope with 60 billion people etc. Perhaps we need to end up in a world like Logan's Run and go floating about in a stadium getting electrocuted when we hit 30. I don't like to see people age I must admit. You wonder what sort of wisdom a person could accrue if they lived to 200.

When I worked at Age Concern in the past you would meet many wonderful elderly people and would then discover weeks or months later they had passed away. So much incredible experiences, stories and knowledge lost and occasionally a very kind individual who you wanted to live as long as possible. Some had come to terms with their life coming to an end but others had not. It feels so important to treat such people with great respect and kindness but many don't seem to feel that way.

In this context, "age is just a number" is harmless, but there are those who use that same phrase for some really sick stuff (e.g. blue spiral shaped triangle).

But I digress, it's good you feel as such.

Like they say age is just a number and sounds as though your in greaat shape and feel good in yourself. My head still feels very young and sometimes I go to do things because my head says I can but my body tells me different lol.

My parents are 82 and 85. They often get the bus out. Neither have any sticks, walkers, aids of any sort but on a full bus of young students no one offers them a seat. They are still old and have issues just not visibly. Something to think about.

Exactly right, age is just a number. I think it’s funny that when we are under 21 we want to be older then up to a certain age you want to younger. Then once you hit the older end you go around bragging how old are you. I know a lady who is 87 but keeps saying I’m nearly 90!

Great news that you still feel so good.I've noticed a downward turn with me these last few years.I do stuff but am everso achy and get tired during the day more than I used to.I'm gonna work to rectify this soon by getting back into outdoor swimming like I used to and summer evening walks.
