Should Kids EARN Their Pocket Money?

Ask a Question

Should kids earn their pocket money by doing chores? And would you give a set amount say £5 a week for keeping their room tidy, emptying the dishwasher, feeding the dog etc or assign a value like 50p to each chore?

Definitely I used to earn my pocket money and I would do other things like babysitting or walking the neighbours dogs and in the summer holidays I used to pick wild bilberries, blackberries and elderberries to make extra pocket money

Yes definitely. I never gave my children pocket money but they never went without. I remember I used to do my mums housework. I vacuumed and dusted a three bedroom house every week and got £2.

Yes, if you get everything given to you then you don't give it any value but if you have had to work for something, what you gain gives you more pleasure knowing that you have achieved it by honest toil and also the incentive to work harder to achieve more.

Yes definately. Cleaning or tidying their rooms, going to the shop, or doing the dishes. It would teach them you have to work for your money and to be clean and tidy and not lazy. Also to be helpful both when they are young, prepare them for adult life and teaching their own family the same morals. I had to cook the dinner for 5 of us, while my mummy worked for more money. Took turns at the dishes, hoovered for my grandparents every Saturday too.

Absolutely, It's a good way for them to learn if there's something they want they have to earn it first. It doesn't hurt for them to start early with just a bit of tidying up.

I think chores for pocket money is a good life lesson. It’s basically like having a job which is something most of us have to do.

Also teaches kids money discipline
