Should more kids get free school meals?
Right now in England, all Children are eligible until year 2 and from year 3 onwards, it becomes income dependant. So should they make it to cover Year 4 or even more?
RegularComper91 I agree, it used to be only poorer kids got them and I really don't understand why the state should pay for richer family kids. There is no reason on earth why the school cannot do this without embarrassing the children getting free meals.
What about a system where parents can, if they can afford to pay a voluntary contribution? Those that need it can access it. Those who can afford it can pay a voluntary contribution via parent pay, A voluntary contribution isn't actually a set charge for your lunch it a contribution of any nomination towards the meal.
I think they should give free school meals to families that are genuine. There was a stigma years ago when I went to school and I had free school meals. I had a friend whose mother had walked out on them on Christmas day and when they was at school the school dinner ladies gave them seconds so that they wouldn't go hungry.No one knows people's circumstances.
Yes.I think that is sometimes difficult to assess the true poverty that many families are going through at the moment.I had free school dinners in the 50s which was very much appreciated and I also has a free bus pass.
If anything there should be some healthy options available to all. Fruit, little snacks, irregardless of income. My son's primary school offered some fresh fruit to all, which I thought was a nice gesture x
nina090976 my grandson went to a primary school where there was fresh fruit set out every morning and break time for the kids. I think my daughter paid £10 month towards it but at time my grandson was fruit mad and he definitely ate more than his £10 worth every week never mind monthly
chele44 I think that's a lovely idea and £10 is great value for money, especially if they enjoy fruits. My kids eat non stop 
teenagers now, raiding cupboards constantly x
