Did You Know about Cast Sheep?

Other

A sheep stuck on their back is called a cast sheep.

If you a sheep who seems like they are stuck on their back, it can die within 24 hours, this is due to the build up of gases in their stomaches. This happens more with those that have heavy woollen coats, shorter, stockier sheep and those that are pregnant.

You could save a sheep by flipping it back upright, sometimes they need holding up before they regain their balance properly and you may have just saved that sheep's life!

If you can't physically do it, please report it to someone who can.

Interesting to know. I had a quick look online and can only see The Black Sheep Brewery mentioning that term: ‘Riggwelter takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Nordic roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or 'riggwelted' when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance.’

Yes I knew about it as I grew up near a sheep farm and the farmer told us when I was a child that we had to come and get him if we saw a sheep on its back

This is such a coincidence as I read a posting on our local Facebook group only this morning.

Pjran I think it is doing its rounds, due to the time of year, new lambs, and pregnant ewes.= being at super high risk.

Hopefully those that don't know can learn something new and maybe even save a life.
