Do You Know Where the Name 'Haribo' Comes from ?

Ask a Question

This is a classic childrens all time favourite chewy gummy sweet

But i am always curious where the names for these types of products come from

So i did a bit of research and found the answer to this one

I am sure the kids don't care , all they would be interested in is the taste , but here goes anyway

The name HARIBO comes from HAns RIegel BOnn. Hans Riegel was the founder of the company, born in 1898 in Friesdorf (a region of Bonn). In 1920, the company was registered into the Bonn trade register as HARIBO - an acronym of Hans' name and the place Bonn.

So there we go

If anyone has any other name related gems like this i would love to hear about them ?

The name sounds like what I think of them. It's just boiled up sheep skin with colouring and sugars added or used to be I think they make them differently nowadays. This is not the type of confectionary I would ever eat. I used to buy cycling stuff from Wiggle and you would get a small bag of Haribo in the box and it went straight in the bin.

No, I didn't know where the name Haribo came from so it was interesting to see how the name evolved.I would never eat Haribos as they are full of artificial colourings. These are no good for anyone and make children hyperactive. So off my shopping list.

Haribo starmix for me. I loved the old adverts with grown men actors and child voiceovers. One would act like a princess because he had found a ring shaped haribo LOL

I wasn’t aware of this but i do like to know the origins or words or names for things. Most of the time it is someone’s name but sometimes it’s something more unusual

jms19 Some are straight forward like cadburys J

Cadbury was founded in 1824 in Birmingham, England, by John Cadbury (1801–1889), a Quaker who sold tea, coffee and drinking chocolate

telmel the adidas and puma story is always a good one for names. Originally puma was called Ruda as the inventor was called RUdolf DAssler. He copied this off his brother who named Adidas based on his name ADI DASsler.

The name Haribo is an acronym for the founder's name, Hans Riegel, and the city where the company was founded, Bonn, Germany: HAns RIegel BOnn. The company was registered in the Bonn trade register as Haribo in 1920.
