Do You Know Your 'Turkish Delight' ?

Ask a Question

Most of us only normally get to taste this if in the form of a chocolate bar, such as frys turkish delight

But what about the genuine article , ie from turkey ?

I just thought it was a very sweet gooey and sticky block of scented sugar

But it is actually more complex than this

Here are some facts about the real turkish delight

The top flavour is the pistachio Turkish delight. The reason behind its immense popularity among Middle Eastern desserts is due to the combination of crunchy, sweet and chewy texture of traditional Turkish delights with premium pistachios

The most famous brand is KOSKA the famous Turkish confectionery producer since 1907

Turkish delight , despite high in sugar and calories is fairly healthy,

The use of natural ingredients without any preservatives makes Turkish Delight a healthier alternative to other candies

Most european people only know the rose flavoured turkish delight, bright pink and squidgy, this sugar-dusted Turkish delight is hard to resist. Made the traditional way, with cornstarch, this 'Loukoumi' - as it is known in Greece - is gelatine free and lightly sweetened with rose water and almond essence

What does authentic Turkish delight taste like?

This traditional treat comes in a huge variety of delicious flavours. Whether you adore pomegranate, pistachio, or mint, you can get your hands on a wonderful range of fruit, nut, and herb-based aromas. The most popular flavour is rosewater

The most surprising fact for me is that it is good for the kidneys and your skin , quote

Why is Turkish delight good for kidneys?

''Turkish Delight | Jale's Turkish Delights

This sweet treat isn't just a delight to eat but has many benefits. Due to the fact that Turkish Delight is a carbohydrate source, doctors actually recommend that kidney patients eat this tasty treat. It has also been known to help acne, boils & scars''

So go ahead and try it if you haven't already , it is 'delightful' .

I remember Fry's Turkish Delight and the one word I wouldn't associate with it is 'delight' I thought it was vile. I don't know what real Turkish Delight is like but that Fry product has created a hugely negative perception of turkish delight in my mind that I will likely never be able to conquer.

TheChimp Thanks. Yes, it has put me off eating "genuine" Turkish Delight from Turkey. This happened years ago. I haven't eaten Fry's Turkish Delight for years. Years ago, I used to choose the Turkist Delight as part of a pick'n'mix from Wilko.

telmel I remember that advert very well. Very arty for what the product is. It may have contributed to me trying it but unfortunately one taste of it was enough for my lifetime. Still a very good advert though although I guess it would get annoying after repeated viewing a few hundred times.

I can't stand Turkish Delight. I've never liked it. My Dad used to love it and I would buy him some every year for Christmas, he was the only one that liked it in our house. Tastes like perfume to me.

I bought some in Turkey off a street seller. He run around the back and then sold me stuff which was worse than anything I have ever bought at home.I think they have different stuff in hand for the tourists.I buy some from a Turkish shop near where I live.I agree the pistachio is rather good.I don't mind the Fry's one but its more like rose jelly.
