Do You Still Have a Landline?

Ask a Question

Do you still have a landline phone? I haven't had one for years now, we do everything through our mobiles.

I have a landline and currently with Shell and my mother is with Shell as well so we get free calls between each other on the landline but must never ever use it for any other outgoing calls due to excessive pricing. I get 250 minutes on my RWG mobile contract which cost £35 for 24 months i.e. about £1.40 a month so all my outgoing calls apart from my mother I use that.

My broadband contract ends in April I think so will be changing then to get the best deal and possibly some cashback. I'd definitely consider a deal without a landline.

Yes, it’s what my elderly parents use and up until now has been good back-up if networks go down. Now they are going to switch to digital not sure if that will be the case anymore. I also use for doctors and my garage.

Yes, and No. Yes, I've got a landline via Virgin Broadband. No, because if there is a power cut, the WiFi goes down and I no longer have a landline. Scrapping the copper landlines is not about 'upgrading', it is about cost cutting by saving on maintaining hard infrastructure.

as somebody that does not like mobile phones (yes I know it is shocking that life can go on without them) - the landline is a blessing.

We greatly value our landline, and positively hate all mobile technology as people who have it seem addicted, and it's killing normal human relationships....It has to go everywhere with them and takes precedence over everything else.

A couple we recently met came round to see us for lunch. A nice conversation took place for about an hour. Then the phone of one of them rang and she disappeared out of our living room door to take the call. A minute later her other half's phone rang and he disppeared out of a different door! It was a pantomime. Then our guests upped and offed in the next 10 minutes. Boom!!...the abrupt end of our party and all the effort put into it.

Some years ago now, another family, with growing up offspring used to put on lovely Xmasses for us for quite a few years. But when the younguns reached their adult years, everyone was tapping away on their phone, conversation fizzled out and the parents disappeared into the kitchen. It was pointless us being there and we bid eventuall them all good bye...for good.

We manage very nicely with a landline, still on copper cabling, which we ignore if we have guests ...and a MacBook laptop with broadband in my study on an ethernet cable. All this works fine. So far we have avoided online banking.

Yes, we do have a tiny, 1.0, pay-as-you-go mobile phone for emergency use and letting each other know when we're coming back home. It lives in the car except for recharging. Since we've never puzzled out how to send texts, it remains firmly "off" unless we want to phone the other party who will be at home. We don't give out the mobile number.

Our landline enables us to have relaxed and private conversations with our friends, at convenient times, which do not cut into outings/visits or similar occasions.

........and, believe it or not, we have a very happy life!!!

Our age group, well over 60 and 70, respectively.

thelmiandev Excellent.I have had my mobile phone switched off for five days and there are 12 elongated voice messages of over 1 and half hours from the same person showing increased aggravation that i have not answered.I just sent a brief text saying I am on a tech fast and that a house visit will ensue.Suffice it to say,I will not take my phone with me if I am visiting people..soo rude.I'm 60.

After many, many years of a landline, I finally bit the bullet last year and ditched it, saves around £10 a month. Really missed it at first, but now I'm glad I lost it.

I have always had one. The news about the line service being shut down has not been advertised enough. The understanding is that landlines will have to be plugged into routers once the switch off happens. This will cause widespread panic for the elderly and vulnerable who don't understand that they will need some type of router. Those that need one should be being provided with access by the big companies for free. However as we all know, there will be con artists who will go all out to scam people into paying for this service

Yes. It's there so the kiddos can call emergency numbers or numbers of trusted friends and neighbours if and when needed (and yes, they've been trained and have occasional refreshers).

How do you get internet without having a landline? Am I missing something here? I am sure some replies will come back as either by using a dongle (which I've found costs the same as landline rental), or use mobile phone network, but that's no good in areas of bad coverage.

Amazed so many still have them. Moved home, plugged in a handset within 2 days scam calls despite not giving out number and being ex directory.

Unplugged it then never used it. 18 months later re contracted with Plusnet who offered a broadband only package.

So no active line now. £5pm unlimited calls & texts on mobile. Mobile also has wifi calling.

Like many others we have one - but dont really use it. Its permanently plugged into an answer phone which tells people to leave a message - Its only ever my mother in law that phones us on it! Get about 5-6 calls a week but they must all be spam. Would happily loose it but it comes with the virgin broadband. I am sure eventually we will lose it though

We have a landline with broadband and use it every day. We don't have smart phones, the mobile phones we have don't connect to the internet, they are just for emergencies when out in the car.

I know I am a technophobe but I have no idea how it would all work without a landline even though my best friend only has a mobile (no landline), it's all like black magic to me!

We have a package with sky and a landline is included. I never use it as I have to pay for the calls. I use my mobile as it is unlimited. All I get is scam callers or if I have given a company my number to get in touch. I know my house number but no idea what my mobile number is. I suppose I will have to learn it one day. 😬

We have digital landline supplied by Virgin as backup if Internet goes down. Some numbers 0345 are charged so we use smart phones. Was once discharged from hospital and internet was down so had to use hospital phone to call wife to collect me, so it does happen. Smart phones can be switched to silent for social reasons so it's not the technology fault but the user. We get landline calls from hospital, friends, etc.

Landline has answer and message and this is used rather than text if the caller has a long message.

I get few spam on landline but lot on email

No I don't. They apparently are being done away wuth, except in circumstances where people are unable to go online etc. They charge you for having a landline, then your calls afterwards, whether you use it or not. Most broadband providers anyway.

I still have a landline and i noticed no one mentioned the fact you have to keep your mobile charged to use it, you dont do this with a landline

Or if your service provider goes down how do you make calls ?

Unfortunately we are all forced to depend on technology now and some people tend to sneer at those with landlines

But when your mobile gives up the ghost or gets stolen or a number of other scenarios happen then you might be glad to still have one

Its a similar situation with banking, we are all forced to go to online banking now, no human interaction is involved and the scammers love it, so easy to hack into and drain your bank account online than to rob a bank

Yes, and while it gets used rarely it's essential to have in case electricity goes down so phone calls can be made, if necessary.

Making it all online is a bad path.
