Late Queens Memorial Could Cost up to £46m as Search Begins for Design Team

In the News

What is going on here in the UK ??

We are all being told to tighten our belts as there is massive debt and a massive black hole that needs to be filled

Yet the government is giving away more than £46 million of taxpayers money to fund the commissioning of a statue in St James’s Park

I had great respect for the queen , not so much the other royals , but i am sure she would not wish this vast amount to be spent on a tribute to her , surely a fraction of that amount would be more realistic, what is it going to be made of , Gold ?

The royal family should pay for it themselves from their Billions of ££££'s, not the tax payer, £46m is absolutely ridiculous

martinlufc5637 I agree M, the king has a vast fortunate accumulated and would not miss this amount, ridiculous as it seems for a statue

Mind you someone paid $6.2 million for a banana taped to a wall not long ago, so nothing surprises me anymore , and the buyer ate it just after purchase

martinlufc5637 i saw in the news recently that the royal family wanted to open up one of their properties to the public. They wanted to charge people for entry which is fair enough, except that they wanted to keep the money made even though it is the tax payers who have funded the renovation.

telmel yeah people starving and someone pays this for a banana, how is that even Art, it's nonsense, anyone can do this, but not everyone can paint a masterpiece that is a true Art piece

jms19 yeah it's typical of the royals, let's charge people for something they've already paid for, they are laughing at us!!!

martinlufc5637 Look at the painting by Paul Gauguin, M 'Bowl of Fruit and Tankard before a Window'', a beautiful work of art and not a banana in sight

jms19 I always suspect SIR Keir Starmer is a 100% capitalist (Tory) preying on the working class and laughing at them. His lifestyle and views are an insult to the ordinary working-class people who are struggling daily. This nonsense statue is the final nail in his coffin regarding the working-class taxpayers funding it.

jam45 Then there is always the problem of the statue being torn down

It happened with winston churchill's monument so who says it won't happen with this

It only takes someone to be offended with the history of the royals

Either that or it will be stolen after being erected, imagine the ransom a thief could ask for its return valued at £46 million 🙄

Yeah this is the stuff that annoys me, there are people visiting food banks but then they want to spend millions on this.

jms19 ...My partner's brother & sister in law help out at Sheffield Food Bank that covers our city, they also do the litter pick around our area & the brother in law is involved with the planting, weeding & upkeep of our local park & roundabout,he was a landscape gardener with his own business, now retired he leads a group of volunteers.

Partner's brother is 70 & his wife is older...

They are doing their best to help with council cuts while 46m of tax payers money goes to this!!!

Although I am a Monarchist that doesn't mean I am necessarily a fan of the royal family as individuals. I deplore this waste of money when pensioners are freezing, children are hungry, everything is daily costing more and our services despite being below par are suffering more and more cuts. I can think of 46 million ways to spend this money more wisely.

Lynibis ...Totally agree with you, services are being cut for the most vulnerable people, cold damp homes full of mould, children who don't even have a proper bed, never mind a bedroom...

Absolutely disgusting that this is going to come out of tax payers money. £46m for a memorial when the cou is in a right mess with people struggling all over

Money we could use elsewhere. If we didn't have such a high cost if living with services being cut I'd have no issues but as that's not the case I'd rather the money was better spent

My memorial will probably be an angel statue from Studio or another discounted something.Actually if someone digs my ashes into the ground and plants a herb bush or a pine tree above that'll do .Cheap as chips me.
