Latest Basic Food Item to Suffer 'Shrinkflation'
In the News
Besides putting up the price of its' butter Lurpak is also reducing the size by 20%, from 250 grams to 200
I know which side my bread is buttered on and i know it wont be with Lurpak
I will stick to supermarkets own brands that are usually cheaper
This shrinkflation has to stop and people need to vote with their wallets and purses

I absolutely agree . It's ridiculous and I don't understand how they are aloud to get away with it totally wrong in my eyes
What gets me is that many people are above the poverty line and don't have to tighten their belts so much so they just shrug their shoulders and pop these items in their shopping baskets. If shoppers took a stand and boycotted these products they would soon increase the size or decrease the price. This is pure deceit, hoping we won't notice and taking us for fools.
jam45 but so much more in the last few years. If we bought the cheaper versions (one commenter mentioned butter for £1.29)instead of the famous brands their profits would plummet. But I agree it probably wouldn't work as per the first sentence in my comment above, there will always be plenty of people who will still buy overpriced items.
Don't get me started on the size of butter or the price of it ,it's messed up and yet we still go out and pay the money for it these supermarkets are taking the **** with there pricing
telmel I don’t know the ins and outs but i don’t mind prices going up when the components required to make it increase in price. That’s logical, but what’s happening atm is a joke. The big companies are just taking advantage of the situation but i suppose that is capitalism.
The government are supposed to look after us though and they clearly couldn’t care less.
I don't buy anything branded, let alone lurpak, outrageously priced!!! Even buying all the basic non branded supermarket ranges the cost just gets higher and higher, and you get less and less for your money, I try not to even go shopping now unless I have some vouchers from all the various apps I do
telmel i work full time plus overtime, but it's sooo hard at the moment, I do several different apps now and manage to get about £20 a week total in Asda or Tesco vouchers from them, then really plan what to buy with them to make the most of it
Where the hell do they get 15% rise from? Butter, both Lurpak, Anchor and other brands have risen by 50% give or take. I copied The para below from telmel link.
The popular butter brand's, which is owned by Arla Foods, unsalted block has gone from 250g to 200g - even though prices have shot up by around 15% over the last year - the startling rise in cost has continued to make headlines over the last 12 months.
(The shabby grammar is not mine!)
I've didn't buy that brand of butter even before the crisis started as even back then I thought it was expensive but now if I would to compare now and then prices .. it's absolutely absurd
I bought a couple packs of 250g salted butter in Farmfoods today for £1.29 each. There are other options to these expensive imported brands.
Any ol spread suits me.I aint posh.I'll continue to vote with my feet as well as my hands lol.
I've been thinking of this for a while with the whole "cost of living crisis" .Oddly today I was making a cuppa and it dawned on me so like a 4pint of milk , do we get 4 pints ? I do feel the cost of living crisis is in some ways an extension of "rip off Britain " and echoing what your saying telmel and voting with your feet. I have started going to Birmingham as they have a fantastic fruit / veg market and Meat/fish market and the bargains I have been getting has been astonishing and keeping my money in my bank account.
It's disgusting isn't it that companies are allowed to get away with this. It's not OK. The majority of us are struggling
We always bought flora but now switched to cheaper my brand loyalty all round is shrinking
I still buy Lurpak but only when on offer. I have convinced my husband to eat supermarket own brand of chocolate biscuits, he certainly knows the difference in taste of baked beans thought.
I’m curious as to why they are doing this as dairy farmers have taken/no choice drop in the milk price. They were finally getting the right amount but now back to square one despite milk and dairy products in the shops not dropping prices to consumers
There’s a lot of profiteering going on, on the cost of living crisis excuse. Fuel costs have substantially reduced so that should have also been passed on to consumers but no food prices continue to rise to name one thing the decafe teabags I buy went up 10p in a week, pure profit
Ah man this is like when then decreases the size of all the chocolate bars. Bit cheeky hey
I can't say I really ever bought Lurpak, I'm not brand specific with a lot of things.
I have however seen many people giving away milk or cream that is going out of date or seeing it at 10p in shops, at the end of the day. Many people whip it up and turn it into butter. I really should give it a go! So many videos and additions you can add in to make it personal and more to your liking.
You can even add some herbs and garlic and free them in ice cube trays, then you have it ready for cooking and in portions.
I was craving chocolate yesterday so went to my local shop as I needed a pint of milk as well, to tide me over to main shop. All the Cadbury varieties were flashed on wrapper as £1.35 so I went to pay with the milk and it was £2.78. I was distracted but as I got outside it hit me that I had been charged £1.43 for one pint of milk. It is only £1.45 for 4 pints in the supermarket. I expect small locals to charge over the odds but surely that is taking the pee.
I can remember Cadbury (same length and width, but a lot thicker 200gms) costing £1 not so long ago. The bar I bought was 120gms!
Lynibis I think chocolate is one of the items that has increased in price and shrunken the most
Yes , cocoa prices have soared , but they are charging a premium for this happening and ripping us all off
Again i would go for the supermarkets own brands to get the price down
I think it all started with toblerone shrinking their bars by taking out a few pyramids and making more spaces
www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/8ce0re/newish_toblerone_has_more_empty_space_between_the/
Lynibis The reddit comments are quite amusing L, but a bit brash, someone mentions they only reduced the size of the bar in the uk , another blames brexit
I always used to buy toblerone at the airport when i was going or coming back from holiday, quite often you could find a large bar for £1 or £1.50
As soon as they did the dirty trick with the spacing i stopped buying it , plus the prices rocketed
I copied a link from the comments L , and this is 7 years ago and prices still rocketing
The Americans commenting also mentioned coca cola doubling in price there, so not just us
Yes, it would be interesting to see the notebook

Pfs I can well believe that P they have two choices with drinks , reduce the bottle size, or water it down , the latter is less obvious and more deceiving
With food they can remove some ingredients , use inferior, or reduce the size, they seem to opt for size reduction , easier to change than the ingredients i suppose
Pfs True, the honest statement would be new and inferior
Even oreos get a mention , had to edit the language

Oreos really pi@ses me off too. They shrunk the package while also cutting the filling nearly in half, effectively making double stuff the same as a regular oreo used to be.
In addition to that, you can tell they changed their ingredients because the cookie doesn't get soggy in milk as well as it used to. In the past it would only take a few seconds before it was falling apart. Now I have to dunk my cookies for a solid 30 seconds to a minute just so they won't be too crunchy.
I know it's not good for the planet, but if it was as bad as they were saying, they wouldn't do something about it overnight but seem more about money .
If they aren't making the package sizes smaller they are reducing or changing the ingredients. All of this appears to be in an attempt to increase their profits. Such a sad society where the rich are squeezing us on every basic commodity.
Ridiculous and really unfair on the consumers. Especially those who are struggling. We all work hard for our money and don't need to get ripped off
