Legal Right to Work from Home?
Ask a Question
DO you think you should have the legal right to work from home?
I heard there are some civil servants who are threatening to go on strike because they have been told they have to go back to the office.
I am not sure about making it a legal right, but if the work is being done and there are no related problems I can't see why they can't. I think it can work for both parties as the worker does not have to pay for travel, though in Winter heating will rise, they don't have to spend time getting spruced up (can lounge in PJ's if they like) and don't have to spend time with people they may not get on with. Nice if you have a pet too.
For the employers their costs will surely go down, hopefully their employees will be happier and more productive. Of course there are so many jobs where it is just impossible to work from home so not sure it could become a legal right for just some of the population.
not a legal right, but a privilege, as my colleague describes it in our recent meeting. If people can’t be trusted and are under performing (due to distractions, laziness, etc.), they need to get back in the office
I could never do that well. Left to my own devices I would lose focus and start wasting time. I'd probably have a coffee every 10 minutes. I guess it depends on how stimulating the job is.
We have phoned companies who are clearly working from home as you can hear babies crying in the background, it does make you wonder what they are concentrating on - you or the baby - I think overall I would prefer that people were in their offices as service over the past few years has plummeted to a new all time low!
Given how lockdown proved we don't need Offices. If people want to work from home they should be allowed too. It probably helps the local economy as people working from home will go get take away coffee from the local coffee shop, use local shops
If you have a job that you are able to do from home and your employer gives you the privilege of working from home then it is fine but I don't think it should be a legal right.
Civil servants must be forced to return to the office or face the sack or have reduced wages. I have lost count of the number of times I have email, written or phone the local council and receive a reply at least four to 12 weeks later especially during covid. That is why the majority of high streets shops are closing down so fast.
There needs to be a balance. We have to work 2 days a week in the office so we can get our tem meetings face to face which is a good thing. It has also saved our NHS employer money as we have been able to reduce the office space taken up. Having said that many of the jobs have to be done on site so not everybody has the options that we do.
No, it should be up to the employer. If people don't like it then they can always find a job that does offer working from home.
It seems a little unfair on the people who cannot work from home. Retail employees, supermarket workers etc etc
