Do You Mend Your Clothes?
Ask a Question
This morning I was sewing a bra because the underwire had started to protrude. It’s a comfy nude colour bra and unfortunately it’s no long on the M&S site so I decided to repair it.
Do you mend your clothes?
If it is a simple procedure then yes I do, but I am no seamstress. I do try to recycle if past mending though.
I always try to repair clothes and do my best but my youngest daughter is brilliant at sewing, so neat and tiny stitches, so l get her to repair clothes now.
eyeballkerry my daughter doesn’t own needles or thread so brings her mending home to me
Pjran My daughter still lives at home and I have handed down all the sewing boxes and knitting bags to her. She taught herself to crochet and now sells hats.
I can’t say I’ve ever really mended any clothes apart from sewing buttons back on when they have come off.
I’m not the best with needle and thread, I always wait till I see my mum. However in your situation I’m sure I’d be able to it, thinking about it I have that happen to one of my bikini tops. So thanks for the reminder, let’s see if I actually do it..
I always try to mend my clothes and my grown up daughters always bring me there stuff to mend it takes me a while now as I have arthritis in my hands and fingers but I love sewing x
I haven't mended anything since I started with arthritis in my fingers..15 years ago..I would always sew a hole in my socks or put a button back on..
Yes I mend clothes. Only if it is something simple like sowing up a hole or putting a patch over something. If it is something more serious then I will take it to the tailors. I always fix my sons clothes and mend mine and my husbands too.
I would fix more clothing if someone invented iron on buttons, I hate sewing buttons back on
I do try. I have learnt to use my sewing machine. I'm liking the fact I can try to fix stuff. Better for us and the environment
Jerseydrew you’re so right. Extending our clothes can impact on wasted fabrics as only wool and cotton can be compostable.
Pjran exactly they don't last forever but extending them helps. Good for our pickets and environment
Yeah - I always try to mend. I was bought up having ‘make do and mend’ as a normal practice. Like all these recycling programmes on TV - my family has always done that - maybe not as nicely tho lol.
Yeah I always sew my clothes mostly leggings always have holes on the thigh area lol my stitching skills not that good but does the job until it rips again haha and then if it’s beyond sewing anymore it’s in the bin
I do. I prefer to get the most out of clothing, especially if the quality of the material is good
Once in a blue moon I thread a needle and sew things but it takes me longer to thread the needle than do the sewing these days..even the ones with the big eyes..
I like to wear leggings but once the seams split, they are difficult to repair in a lasting way because of body movement.I repair other items wherever possible but in the end some things become too old and faded and they have to go.
Yes, I always try to do so, so it’s very hard for me to chuck out anything, as I know if it still fits, it still has life in it
I tend to throw things away but I cannot remember the last time I needed anything repairing
Not underwear generally but I do mend other items, buttons, bags straps, rips in clothing that are easy on my sewing machine, however I am yet to figure out how to put in a new zip,I have a special footer for zips for my machine but not sure how it works!!!! it's on my list to learn in the winter as I have 3 bags and a coat currently waiting for new zips,
Pjran no that's far too expert for me, just simple mending and I have made some simple square cushions
I do not mend my own clothes however when my daughter was school age I made 6 dickensian costumes for her and her friends to go carol singing complete with lanterns on sticks.
EmmaWright762 they look amazing. I used to make my daughters‘ ballet costumes when she was in various productions.
Yes I’m always sewing something though it’s usually for grandkids, whether it’s shortening trousers or taking in waists or even re stuffing teddy’s that have been squashed to within an inch of their fur. I’ve even ended up making clothes for teddys or knitting or crocheting blankets for dolls
