Is It Me or Are Mince Pies Really Expensive This Year?

Ask a Question

Tesco Finest are £3 and Asda's are £2.75. God knows how much they are in the likes of M&S.

I'm sure that they weren't this price last year and even taking inflation into account, 50p for a mince pie seems expensive.

Is It just me?

You can get them cheaper TC, as low as £1.09 a pack , not the luxury ones though

Heres a list of all the prices

I have had Iceland mince pies before and they were not too bad , they give 5 out of 5 here

M&S only get 2 out of 5 for their luxury ones , very surprising

telmel Thanks for that. I do like a posh mince pie though.

I only placed an Iceland order this morning because I fancied a black forest gateau for my tea. If I'd known that their mince pies were supposed to be good, I would have ordered some.

TheChimp A shame that TC , yes i like the taste of the standard mince pies and a good price

I think they were voted one of the best in a national survey a while back

Also found this on google for their luxury pies , prices are obviously higher now £2.50 a box today

www.iceland.co.uk/p/iceland-luxury-6-all-butter-mince-pies/56837.html

Iceland's Luxury All Butter Mince Pies (£1.89 for six, or 31p per pie) also notched up the top score of 73%. One panelist said they tasted “like a more expensive product”. The pies were also crowned the best overall supermarket mince pie in the recent Christmas taste test from Good Housekeeping.Nov 18, 2020

jam45 Good idea J, you can buy a few reduced packs and freeze them, they will last around 3 months that way

telmel What about the expiry date? I have never ignored this or even freeze reduced food.

jam45 I think the expiry date refers to the product when fresh J, if you freeze before the expiry date it will last well past this date , probably a few months before it starts to lose its flavours

We keep an eye out for offers and only justify buying them then. Then the posh ones are as affordable as the standard ones.

I have begun my yearly mince pie bakeathon, about 4/5 dozen so far. About £3.50 in Sainsbury's butter (£1.39 per block, nectar price) McDougal flour £1.60 per bag so about £2 and 3 jars of mincemeat @ 40p per jar bought last new year in sale bbe of March 2024.

So total of around £6.70 so about 12p each. Call it 15p if you allow for milk and sugar. Taste better too!

deborahwil81986 That's more reasonable than the £3 Tesco ones. It just shows how much money that they're making on them if they're charging double

I was in greggs yesterday and their mince pies looked good and I think are reasonable priced, can’t remember the price but they did an offer if you purchased two packs.

eyeballkerry I didn't think about Gregg's. Looking on the app, they are 65p each or 6 for £2.15.

I might have to pop in tomorrow and give them a go.

If anyone decides to make their own mince pies (they are really easy) try doing different toppings. Once you've lined your pie tins with pastry circles and put your dollop of mincemeat in, top with crumble (as in rhubarb crumble), frangipane (as in Bakewell tart) or Viennese biscuit topping. My family's favourite is frangipane so I do more of them than any others nowadays.

The price of everything has gone up loads in the past year, probably only as noticeable on mince pies as it's a year since they were on sale and the normal everyday items have crept up in price gradually over the year.

I'm glad I don't like mince pies then haha, my eyebrows still keep raising at the price rise of things these days, Mr Kipling may make excedingly good cakes but he's got very expensive even when their on offer 🙈

I never buy mince pies as can't stand the taste so wouldn't know if £3 was expensive for them or not. My mother in law always used to buy the Iceland ones for my Granny as Granny said they were the best.

MrsCraig I used to hate them as a kid, but got a taste for them in my 20s for some reason. I love a good mince pie now.

My aunt bought six mince pies about two weeks ago, they were home made and a little more lavish than a luxury store brand. However when she told me they were £5 for them and she admitted to buying 18, I told her she needed her bumps felt.

Hot mince pie with vanilla ice cream, lovely

Interesting fact about mince pies many might already know about , but for those that don't

Mince pies were first served in the early middle ages, and the pies were quite sizeable, filled with a mixture of finely minced meat, chopped up fruit and a preserving liquid. Mincemeat originally came about as a good way of preserving meat, without salting, curing, smoking or drying it.

telmel didn't know that, thanks. Here's another snippet of medieval cookery. When the lords and ladies had eaten the deer they hunted all the nasty bits like ears, cheeks and so forth, called the umbles, would go in a pie for the poor. Hence the saying 'eating humble pie'.

Made 3 dozen frangipane mince pies today which cost roughly £6 to make so 15p each. Ground and flaked almond are quite expensive, had I done ordinary all pastry would have been about £4.50.

TheChimp in the food processor...magic, by hand.... not so good. Only takes seconds in the former so is not overworked. Wrapped and refrigerated while getting everything else out and ready and then roll out as few times as possible. My top tip for mince pies is not to do half as much butter as flour as most recipes state, but always more butter. I do 5ozs butter to 9ozs flour.

50p for a mince pie isn't bad if made by a local small bakery. But for a shop brought one that's a lot of money. I think the price of ingredients has gone up. So not helping.

I found the lower end priced ones aren't much to write home about and rhe luxury ones are expensive.

£2.50 for 6 in m&s I believe but might be lucky and get them free if you have sparks card and it's part their advent calendar
