What is Missing in Schools?

Ask a Question

What do you think is missing in schools that should be taught?

I think gardening should definitely be taught. I've met so many people over the years who say they were never taught it at school or at home so they don't know how to maintain their own garden.

SamGoodship manners should be taught at home and school and be expected in both. Unfortunately, this isn't happening and both manners and respect are sadly in decline!

1:1 funding as there's not enough. There's to much pressure to teach kids stuff that's outdated. We have to teach kids basic parenting issues like teeth cleaning

How to budget, how to sew on a button, make your own curtains, knit a jumper. Old fashioned house keeping stuff, cook a basic meal . It used to be taught as home economics in the past!

For me children need to be taught money matters from savings, mortgages, pensions and the list goes on. So much debt in this country.

eyeballkerry I wholeheartedly agree. I had no idea what to do when it came to getting a mortgage and found it very confusing.

The one thing I see that is utterly moronic about our population is not even a simple understanding of economics and how the economy works by a huge percentage of the population. The current population seems to be on economic self-destruct with no regard how they spend their money and the damage they cause to the economy so I certainly feel kids should get a grounding on how the economy works and what damages it and what improves it. This should be incorporated into a full understanding of money and how to manage their own.

Sign language , I think is important to be taught in schools and 1-1 support for kids that need it . But unfortunately their is lack of funding for 1-1 support even to the people who need it the most .

Bsl, 1st aid, cooking should be compulsory for gcse, life skills ie : money budgeting, basic wood work, changing a plug, basic sewing...not all parents/guardians can teach this. The dangers of social media, teach the importance of how bullying can be dangerous.

Surely if 1 term was for each of these then children would have more ideas on how to survive in life in general. Also Bring back the school bank

clairrobins74 it's when the banks go into primary school and open up savings accounts for the children....that's if there's any banks left🧐

To learn to cook healthy meals using fresh ingredients no packets or ready made sauces.

We have children who don't know what a fresh vegetable is or even how to prepare it.

chris150565 We also have kids who think that steak comes from Tesco. My g.daughter is only 4 but knows all about the food chain because my son has a smallholding so has a few pigs, sheep, even turkeys. He's taken a few animals into the school for the kids to see & my g.daughter has stood at the front of class and told the kids about animals, including shearing sheep and taking animals off to the slaughterhouse.

We have loads of farms around the area who welcome children & allow them to get involved, we even have one small farm which employs a few adults with special needs, that farm is also open to the public with special events for the kids (feed the newborn lambs, piglets, rabbits, cavies etc) but it seems a lot of parents cba to take their kids to these places.

When I was at School we used to take money in every Monday and hand it over to the school secretary and they put it in an account for us and when we left the school we had an amount of money that helped us on our way

More life skills. How to cook healthy, how to manage your shopping, how to find and rent flats, how to obtain a mortgage for a home. How to manage your finances safely. None of this happened at school and I think it should have been. We did get a bit on how to do interviews and secure a job but that’s all we got.

I think in Secondary schools, they should prepare or teach kids the highway code/ the preparation or learning and taking the driving theory test. It would give them a bit more road sense, an advantage in doing and passing their driving tests. Then maybe or hopefully there would be less accidents and little boy racers on the roads.
