We Need Your Help! What Should LD Do Next?

Latest Deals

Hi guys!

We’re trying to get an idea of some potential new changes/additions to Latest Deals and would like your feedback 🙂

The below are all just ideas but we’d like you to vote for your favourite one (if you have time, please do explain why you’ve voted for your choice and perhaps not the others). Please comment with either 1, 2 or 3 below.

  1. Add the ability to like flash deals. We’ve hoovered up everyone’s feedback about our new flash deals section and wondered whether adding the ability to like a flash deal may help people separate the great deals from the mediocre? Let us know what you think!
  2. Create a new way to report a deal as “cheaper elsewhere”. Perhaps you could report a post with a link to another LD deal. We would then verify the price and a new notice would pop up on the original deal saying “Hey! It looks like this may be cheaper elsewhere. Have a look here”. Perhaps bonus points could be awarded for whoever discovered the cheaper deal?
  3. Rejig the like system. We try and walk a careful line between rewarding everyone for their contributions and keeping LD as genuine as possible. A grey area is whether or not we award points for liking posts. By doing this do we risk people liking things for the points rather than because they think its a legitimately good deal? One potential solution could be to remove points for liking posts. Instead we could give extra bonus points if people's deals get lots of likes. We don’t want to reduce the amount of points everyone could earn but this may be a way to redistribute them. What do you think?

It could be everyone loves all the ideas (or indeed that you hate them all 😞) and that’s okay! We can do all of them or none of them. But we want your feedback to know what to prioritise and do next!

You may well recognise your own idea above. We’re always reading all the comments and feedback on LD so thank you very much indeed if you came up with any of the above!

Thanks as ever for being part of LD 👍

I think their all good ideas.

Number 1 for definate.

Number 2 sounds good but i think there should be a limit on price difference. Say someone posted a deal for £5 and then its found somewhere else for £4.99. Also i sometimes see deals from amazon a week ago and something was listed as £3.90 and when i click on it the price is now £3.70. I wouldnt relist the deal i would just comment its now 20p cheaper for the original poster to edit.

Number 3 are people really abusing the system to get 25 points a day? 🙈 i like the idea of bonus points for so many likes on a deal thats a fab idea.

No 3

i llike them because i like the item not deal

what’s a deal to someone is different to different someone else thinks

is it really worth arguing over 25 points 🙃

also would like to see differnt option emoji instead of a heart

Need a LD app, when I'm out and about I want to tap, snap and post quickly. I see loads of deals when I'm out and about and I don't post as there is no app!! The no.1 in this space is HUKD they have an app.

Branding of LD needs to be stronger so that image sticks in peoples mind so they think of LD first when they want to post or look for a deal. Currently branding is a lightening bolt and the colour blue.

The chat area needs to be more tailored to what this site is here for.. too many random topics just to rack up points

I think an app would be fab aswell 👍🏻 I find it quite difficult switching between web pages on my mobile to post deals 🤣

They are all good ideas, but I like Number 3 the best 👍

I think all three suggestions are fair so I have no objections to the changes. Number 3 - Personally, I take time to vote on deals that I think are good value and never use the vote on deals that are clearly overpriced - the same goes for deals that can't be bothered to state the delivery charges. (for 100 points I believe the poster should definitely find it out and state it)

No.3 would seem the most important to deal with initially. People will like deals without proper thought for the merit....for those saying are 5 points worth it etc., 25 points per day is 750 per month. There is no need to have points for liking a deal, if you really like it or have used it why not give a like? Surely it is just a nice thing to do for the poster of a good deal.

Better the poster gets a few extra points when likes have been genuinely given for no reward, number of points to be set by the founders.

I like the sound of no.2 also but as I do not use LD for deals i will remain impartial on 1 and 2.

I could see people voting for their friends deals or those popular on this site if you change the system. Keep the 5 points for liking a deal, seems fairer than who’s popular.

I like the idea of 2 & 3..

1. I don't really pay much attention to the flash deals.

2. It has been getting a little silly with the 80% off chinese "deals" lately, even with the apparent 80% off it's still cheaper elsewhere.

3. Probably the best option!

I only like deals that I think deserve it, some days I've only liked 2 or 3 posts, other days I have liked 10+..

So taking the points away for liking posts would not bother me in the slightest. 🙂

Also, I don't think the poster should get extra points for a popular post.. As said above, they can get friends and family to like it or even make multiple accounts..

I've seen absolutely terrible "deals" that have been popular, like the so called little 15cm plastic fish tank! It wasn't even fit for a tadpole never mind a fish! That post got about 50+ likes 😕..

I've also seen popular "freebie" posts that have been from american companies with unsecure websites..

Those are the kind of deals I don't think deserve "extra points" for becoming popular.

I vote for 3. Even with its pitfalls, the truly good deals will often shine - and its a better way to help elevate the really good deals. 2 is also a good idea, which can currently be done via commenting on deals atm, which I know some people already do

I agree with number 3 getting bonus for a certain number of likes for great deal will encourage users to find better deals instead of liking posts.

My vote is for number 3. There should be no points reward for liking deals. Liking a post takes too little effort to be worthy of a reward. LatestDeals is unique in offering rewards and should rightly expect users to actually graft for the points.

It could be that some people would feel too guilty about quickly liking 5 random deals in new just to get the points. So they like the deals that already have decent likes without really even looking. They're assuming it's a good deal because others have already liked it. Which could explain the pile on effect that's sometimes seen on a less than worthy deal.

Keep up the great work!

Unfortunately none of those ideas will sort of the issues with the ‘fake ‘ deals in the Flash Deals section.

nnnnnnnn actually pointed out on one of the deal pages that the minimum discount isn’t helping and I agree - it’s encouraging the posters to inflate their prices to make the discount look bigger. nnnnnnnn also suggested maybe having a button to report a fake RRP.

I appreciate that that part of the site brings revenue, however, the are other sites doing the same. So surely best to go after quality rather than quantity - and in due course have less deals but better ones and accordingly charge more for advertising the deals in due course as they’ll get more quality leads.

The issue at the moment is that the site is often seemingly knowingly allowing these sellers to advertise ridiculous RRPs and then discounting the price to a point above the normal selling price.

1. no point, many people believe the fake rrp's so will think its a good deal

2 & 3 are both good ideas

No 1: Definitely not. Although a dislike option might help the "rip off" flash deals be more easily identified.

No 2: Maybe

No 3: I, and I think many others, don't take any notice of the likes. they don't seem to have any relevance to the quality of the deal. As others have said too many just use the likes to get their daily 25 points. On the "Freebies" the likes are almost a joke. (In fact most freebies are a joke - they're too obviously data gathering*) some freebies not even worth the time even applying for get likes into treble figures.

Those who genuinely like a deal will, in my opinion, still like deals without reward, but rewarding members for liking deals is almost bound to lead to abuse when so many (not all) are only interested in the points they get for doing so.

* I find it amazing that people are willing to give their name, date of birth and home address for "a tea bag". (no use giving a false address - someone else will get your tea bag)😀 I might mention another I saw earlier on freebies that had numerous likes and there was absolutely no mention of what the freebie was.😀

This! ^^ some people would sell their soul for a "freebie" these days.. I would be way too embarrassed to say I'd even applied for a free tea bag, never mind brag about it on facebook! Lol.

LittleLisaMarie I forgot to mention I would have needed to wait over 11months (my next birthday) to get my free tea bag - by which time I'd probably have forgotten about it.😀

davidstockport some people's mentality when it comes to a "freebie" is quite concerning..

It only takes one gullible person to apply for a dodgy one, post it on here/facebook and the rest just follow like sheep. 🙈

If it's not a reputable company, I don't apply for anything! And definitely not a free tea bag, that's for sure. 😂😂

Kelsey sorry not a direct response to your points but could we add ’pets’ and ’automotive’ to the subcats? Also I don’t know how others would feel but what about posts in chat ordered newest to oldest? Just my two penneth of thoughts 😊

Dino23 A problem with newest first in chat topics is that very often a post is (without being a direct reply) referring to something said before so anyone reading is getting the story backwards. Although on certain topics such as "introduce yourself" (or other extremely long topics) reading newest first is advantageous - I have seen forums where it is possible for the reader to decide in which order they wish to read a topic, If that was possible it would definitely be helpful. But if it isn't... the way it is now is probably preferable.

1. I don't use flash deals

2. That would be great for the Aliexpress brigade, no thank you!

3. If you want to keep LD as genuine as possible stop rewarding people for introducing a friend, this is not needed now and open to abuse, and leave the points system as they are.

Definitely rejig the like system.

It would be great if points were based on how many likes the post got.

And as part of it, introduce a negative vote too.

There's a reason this site gets so many more junk deals than another very popular deals website - people there get 'punished' with down votes if they post bad deals. I think with some of what's posted here, it would be best to introduce that to dissuade people posting useless things for the sake of it.

I don't think posting a deal that goes negative should take points away from people, but extra points gained for popular deals would encourage better deals, and if someone knows a certain deal won't get so much (or any) love, they will (hopefully) think twice about posting a 'deal' that's just clutter.

You might not have noticed but very often it's the rubbish deals that get the most likes - so why should those who post them get rewarded? Until people stop getting rewarded for liking them there seems little point in doing so.

It might be an idea to have "rubbish or scam deal" added to the report feature and when it's seen that the reports are authentic... they're removed and the points removed from the person who got points for uploading them.

davidstockport sometimes, yes, but you also have to factor in that if people like us down vote them, I'd hope it would balance out (or even go negative).

And yes, at the same time, we need to remove the rewards for liking stuff - then people won't randomly like stuff (which likely means they're just liking most recent or most popular deals, inflating their value for no reason).

I really think people here should be more critical too. There have been times I've posted my thoughts on stuff, but other times hold back not knowing if it's the right thing to do (based on rules/community standards), but I really think we should all be very critical of bad deals and hopefully prevent people from posting them.

Oddly, even though there's some overlap with HUKD for example, the community here seems a lot more forgiving (and even full of praise) for some awful deals. But if the rest of us criticise and down vote, hopefully we can teach people not to post crap, or like it before realising how bad a deal it actually is.

The biggest ones that have been annoying for me recently are :

1. Things posted as free, when they're not. You have to read the description to find that you need to pay postage, subscribe to something, be a new member of topcashback (who isn't already, really?!), or buy £50 of products to get a free gift...

2. Different fabric samples posted every single day. I thought at first I was getting de ja vu, or going crazy. But no, it's the same person posting different samples each day - just create a mega thread for it all instead - they'll get more likes, won't clutter the site and so won't annoy people. Win win.

3. Mislabelling things like glitches that aren't actually glitches.

4. Not including postage costs to make something seem cheaper (or free, as I've already mentioned), like "only £1" without saying in the title that postage is an extra £5...

I could go on, but those are some of the poor posting practices I've seen in the past week or so.

I think if negative votes were allowed, and people were more vocal here about what deals are bad, we'd discourage a lot of that.

We're singing from the same hymn sheet - most of the freebies are a joke - regarding points gathering... today I have seen one of the most blatant points gathering tricks imaginable: Copying another members comment then pasting it as own.

I believe most of the members on this site to be decent people, BUT there are a few who will do anything for points. The reward system could unless controlled be this sites downfall, there is, as I'm sure the owners have gathered by now, no easy answer. But they're doing their best and it's up to those whose only only purpose isn't to rip them off for points to help.

I, at time of writing, have only ever liked 19 deals, because I won't like any deal unless I've read what the deal is, or if I have been pipped at the post by another member's deal which I knew to be a GENUINE deal otherwise I wouldn't have tried to upload it. If others would do the same the hearts (likes) shown would be meaningful. I personally (and feel sure others) take no notice of them as it is at present.
