My Neighbour Has Asked Us to Be Quiet as Are Getting Married in Their Garden

Other

I have a neighbour next door but one who has been doing major renovations for the last 5 months and has disregarded all rules at avoiding noise disturbances during certain times. They did it all over every bank holiday including Easter making it unbearable to sit in the garden. Even with the doors and windows closed our home still vibrated in to the late evening 9:30pm.

They are now having a home wedding tomorrow and requested that we be quiet and avoid making too much noise even including the vacuum!! during the ceremony. They will be playing a live band in the garden up to about 11pm.

We haven’t made any objections as weddings can be very expensive (do hope it does finish by midnight though!!)

I however do think it’s a bit cheeky though to ask us to be quiet despite the noise we have endured and willing to accept the extra noise at the wedding.

They even asked whether we were willing to give up part of our drive! We don’t even know them, they’ve lived there for about 3 years and made no attempt to get to know anyone!

I welcome everyone’s thoughts and opinions

Wow that's awful if they had been respectful with renovations you'd be willing to not make noise. They sound very entitled. I'd be telling them to jog on and tell them they had no respect when renovating their house so no chance

Jerseydrew they now have a portable loo block in the front garden!! Must be a lot of people coming!! It is going to be a very noisy next 12+ hours ahead 🥺

They were vacuuming this morning outside at 7am!!! And it was loud

Jerseydrew problem is nobody wants to speak up! Not the first time we have had 2 gigs with live bands by the neighbour next to them in the last 2 years and both went on for the entire weekend! It’s so close now to them all arriving it’s too late to object anyway

Jerseydrew if I’m too noisy I will be the one to also upset the other neighbours so on reflection I won’t use my karcher too long. With a bit of luck they might play some music I actually like. Just better not block my driveway!

Once went to a wedding where everyone brought a bit of food & their own drinks..

On the Thursday nights our Stomp group made all the decorations & the happy couple were married in their church & the Reception was in the local community centre where we had made the decorations..

Musicians who were church members played at the wedding..

janphoenix51 much more sensible option. Having a party is one thing in a garden but weddings attract at least 100 people so never mind the music it’s 100 or so people talking all at once, getting louder as the more alcohol consumed!! Plus the music set up should be indoors not in the garden! There is no wind today so the noise is going to be very noisy and it’s so humid all my windows are open

Night hours are 11.00 pm until 7.00 am. To reduce noise nuisance from houses and premises, the law defines a maximum amount of noise which is acceptable during night hours. When noise exceeds the permitted level, the district council can investigate and take action against the neighbour or other noise source. So it should be finished by 11pm

tara73ziva thanks, it’s a council matter and all I can do if it’s breached is record and report which won’t be picked up until at least Monday morning and what will they do given there workload. Probably wasted calories but good info thanks

How thin are your walls that they are going to hear you vacuuming? This is ridiculous. The first thing they should have done was invite you to wedding.

I would tell them that they aren't using your driveway and make sure that there is no room on it just in case they try and use it anyway.

I would go about your usual daily business.

jillylovesyou once the evening guests arrive the band will probably get louder. I would never have a wedding in my back garden, it's too inconsiderate.

MrsCraig The DJ has started and it’s just as loud! Total inconsideration. Can’t believe it’s allowed! Road is getting so blocked traffic is struggling already and it’s a country road! Farm machinery and horses really having issues

jillylovesyou it is just so inconsiderate to your neighbours. If they have had to pay for a DJ, a band and a big marquee and food then why not hire somewhere to host it that would be more appropriate? Guaranteed that they will be the most disliked neighbours on the street after this, good luck to them if they ever need a favour.

If they can make so much noise your house rumbles, then ignore them and go as usual. Pretty disrespectful behavior of them.

jillylovesyou You could possibly call the cops (even though I don't find them reliable these days) as that could be construed as a Public Nuisance.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/simplification-of-the-criminal-law-public-nuisance-and-outraging-public-decency

The only problem with this is that it could make the relation with your neighbor "muddier," but it's their fault for being disrespectful to you and the environment.

PhilipMarc if the volume is still excessive at 9pm I might as this volume is going to be even worse when the sun goes down. It really doesn’t need to be as loud as this! It’s actually giving me a headache as it’s super bassy

jillylovesyou Are you married by any chance? If so, couldn't your husband ask them to be moderate about the dB / level of noise?

Neighbours eh! They sound very selfish & need telling so. Our neighbours last year had a garden hen party. BBQ, music went on till 1am. We didn't mind as it was a one off & they are decent & respectably the rest of the time. I can understand tho if your already miffed at their lack of consideration prior not being enthralled with this either now. I do also agree they should have at least offered an invite to the neighbors. Certainly would soften neighbourly relations giving how disruptive it will be to all your weekends. I'd have a word next week.

JLouM I had to ask them to turn it down about 10:15 as I couldn’t keep my windows shut any longer! It’s so hot. It’s still going but considerably lower but in my opinion still too loud for 11:10 at night in a domestic garden
