Scientists Teach Rats to Drive Model Cars

Other

Ok, they were not driving normal cars, these were modelled from a plastic cereal container

But they had an accelerator , a wire the rats grabbed acting like a pedal , and steering

Later they upgraded the vehicles to the equivalent of EVs , all electric, and made everything like tyres and levers indestructible so the rats couldn't destroy them by chewing on them

With further practice they were even able to drive in certain directions and didn't even need GPS

They found the rats that were in a richer environment , eg cages with objects and toys drove quicker and better than those with no stimulants

Maybe the next stage is to make them take a driving test , then they can be issued with a licence

So rather than being caught in rat traps, they are now more likely to be caught in speed traps !

I can see it now, policeman '' Do you know you were exceeding the speed limit Mr Roland ?

'Sorry officer' said Roland ''i was thinking about my the ferris wheel back home in my cage and got carried away ''

Those are very lucky rats and seem to be in a very caring environment. I clicked into the video expecting to see rats exploited and treated badly but actually it was very positive. I'm not really sure what we can learn from this though and certainly don't think its important scientific work but its nice to see rats having a good time.

BonzoBanana Yes they seem well cared for B , it shows how intelligent they really are, that's why they breed so fast in the wild, they are intelligent and resilient

At the end of the day they cannot help the way they have to survive, all they want is to find food and they only bite if in fear of being attacked , imagine a being 100 times the size of you wanting to kill you just because they fear you and treat you as vermin

Nobody wants rats in their home , but all they want is shelter and food , not to hurt anyone

But like spiders and snakes they are widely feared by us just because of their existence

Saying all that they do carry disease in the way of fleas and did contribute towards the bubonic plague , but tame home rats should not be a problem

Jerseydrew Yes that's true J, i wonder how many people here own one but don't like to say ?

I can understand it if you own a cat though , there might be a conflict of interest there Image

Pjran There must be reasons for the research P, possibly studying their behaviour might benefit us in some way, who knows
