No Cigarettes on TV Programmes but Loads of Wine !

Other

Has anybody else noticed that as cigarettes are the big bad wolf - you rarely see anyone smoke in recent programmes. But it now seems to be that as soon as people are home from work (in the tv programme) the first thing they seem to do is pour themselves a glass of wine in a glass big enough to hold about half a bottle- or get themselves a glass of neat whiskey etc. do you think this is just as bad as people smoking on tv or not. I worry that our teenagers will just presume that its fine to have a drink as soon as you get home as they see it so often on tv ?

I think to some extent ,that Tv needs to reflect real life so the odd ciggie and pint of beer/glass of wine are suitable so long as usage is proportionate. Italian gangster films are full of people in restarants and at table. The films I usually turn off in a hurry are the ones where people can't get to the bedroom quick enough and are throwing all their clothes down the hallway lol.Tells me that there can't be much of a storyline to follow if they have to start out with torrid passion scenes.

MelissaLee1 I so agree with your comment. I find sex scenes that are too graphic a real turn off. There are plenty of online places to see all that if you're so inclined. I don't want to be put in the position of being a voyeur. In my everyday life I wouldn't watch people 'at it' so why on tv? For those who say switch channels or use the off button. Why should I? Especially if it is an otherwise good programme. I would be channel hopping all evening!

Lynibis I agree with you especially if you’re watching tv with teenagers.

I have never smoked and it seems really weird to see it on tv now, except in programmes set in the past when it reminds us how awful it was! How lower wage earners can afford to smoke is beyond my ken.

I can't say that I've noticed to be honest. I'm always doing something else when I am watching TV so I probably miss loads. It doesn't bother me, programmes should reflect real life to an extent and drinking is a part of some people's lives.

I’m medically retired so the tv is like having a human voice around. I dont drink - purely because I was a barmaid part time for about 30 years and I saw how alcohol could change people- i suppose that might be why i notice it. If i have been out anywhere I dont reach for a wine bottle when i come home - i switch the kettle on.

Smoking and alcohol are both toxic and addictive so bad period. I'm concerned about the level of objectification and assaults on people (no seems to mean yes) as a result of this being the premise of SO many TV programmes these days. I purposefully switch off from programmes that show full frontal nudity in the first episode (no doubt designed to capture audiences for the long-term). All sorts of inappropriate things are shown too often that influence not just youth, but adults too.

Does the TV still have the watershed - where it has to be past a certain time for certain content to be shown. I have no interest as you say of anything with nudity. I was more sort of curious that when they decide to ban drinking alcohol being shown what will the tv programmes turn to next.

suevernon1968 I don't think water sheds were even relevant these days as kids can record, watch on YouTube, tiktok etc. I have no objection to moderate drinking on tv, but I suppose if it's a drug or drink addiction drama it has to be shown.

I kind of agree. There should be no smoking or alcohol in tv programmes before watershed. There’s always coffee 😀.

I do remember some years ago there was talk of a reduction in the amount of alcohol shown on tv shows but i’m not sure it ever came to be

There is now strong evidence that alcohol is linked to cancer and I think some countries are putting cancer warnings on alcohol. I think it was in the news a while back that Ireland was putting cancer warnings on wine as well as stronger spirits. Also factor in how many people commit crime when drunk or to get alcohol like shoplifting plus of course all the road deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers. Seems strange to normalise alcohol drinking in TV shows.

Personally, I can do without the authorities telling everyone what to do or not to do - they are taking over our lives with all these rules and regulations!
