How You 'Nose' Its Going to Rain

Other

Forget the weather clock or barometer, you can actually predict the rain by smell

Well at least some people can, a good sniff will tell them that rain is on its way

But its not some kind of magic or 7th sense, its pure science

The unique smell is produced by a soil bacteria, which releases a chemical called 'geosmin' that produces a gas

To simplify it ,the gases are blown by the wind down to our noses and we then smell the rain

Does this mean we will see our tv weathermen and women simply sniffing instead of using the weatherchart ?

Yep, I can smell the rain. I also have sinus issues, so when there are clouds rolling, ready to thunder, I feel it

I have heard about this but thought the smell was after it had rained not before. Usually after a dry spell or is that something different? Anyway it’s been continuously wet and raining or dull and cloudy here. We have had 2 days so far that felt like spring/summer. Still too wet to actually do anything.

We are all better off doing that or looking out of the window as I find that they aren't forecasters any more, they are more 'now casters' as they change it every hour and sometimes it is a drastic change, so all they have done is look outside to see what is happening.

Forecasts are appallingly & shockingly bad and can't be relied upon these days. I don't know how they keep their jobs!

MelissaLee1 I've heard of people with previously broken bones knowing when it's going to rain, as they can feel it. Something to do with the change in pressure...☔
