What Would Make You Take One Way Trip to Mars?
In the News
I read that The Mars One mission to take volunteers on a one way trip to Mars failed into bankruptcy. BUT they had the volunteers. I just cant get my head around a trip that even if I survive I wont return from. So like in Armageddon, what would someone want to volunteer?
Me personally, I would do it if I could live like a King for a year. Unlimited money and travel on Earth to build memories. Then I would go.
No way Jose. I think you would have to be young and more than a little stupid to do this. Isn't it something like 7 years to get there? Then to arrive to absolutely nothing.
Lynibis I am older so not got that many years ahead and few kin. I certainly wouldnt do it if I had my life ahead.
Nah not for me. My Ideal choice would be sent to a Uninhabited Island and spend the rest of my days there like a Robinson Crusoe kind of thing. Not Mars.
Emerge11 Damn, thats my childhood dream to escape adults, the bullies and school
If I was very old and close to death or had some illness where I had a limited lifespan anyway I think I would go to Mars but only if my health issues could still be kept under control until the very end. Ultimately Mars is very bleak and cold. There isn't much to see there and there is very high radiation almost like a nuclear winter here. It's darker being further from the sun although not much darker in the day due to the thin atmosphere. It seems far better to explore it by robot. At the moment mars exploring vehicles are large with limited dexterity and I'm sure in the coming years maybe sophisticated robots will be able to explore much better with the dexterity and power to go into caves for example and I'm sure people on earth will be able to explore with the robot with a delayed virtual reality experience. This seems a much better way of visiting mars rather than humans actually going there.
The most hospitable place to go for human life in the solar system apart from the Earth is Venus. If you can stay in the clouds of Venus and not venture below then you have a similar pressure, temperature and buffer gases to Earth. You will need Oxygen but you may be able to exist there almost with normal clothes except for a oxygen mask. However again most of us would be worried about failure of what ever vehicle we are in and then falling into the horrific furnace and pressure of Venus below which would kill us immediately.
I think before we get too ambitious we really need to create a colony on the moon which is much cheaper and more practical and any emergencies can be assisted relatively quickly by ships from Earth. Just seems the logical approach to space travel. Perfect the equipment close to home before going on more ambitious missions with more well tested equipment.
BonzoBanana Thanx for a great detailed reply Bonzo.... That is a fantastic response. A lot to think about
If I was on my own, I'd definitely go, I know a few people I'd like to send and never return though lol
There would have to be something really really bad on earth to make me leave it. If i going to die if I stayed on earth then I’m first in the queue.
