Orca Whales in Salmon Hats

Other

Teenage orca whales have fashion trends it seems. In 1987, at least three groups of the aquatic mammals inexplicably began wearing dead salmon as hats. The mysterious “salmon hat” trend may have started when a few orcas off the coast of Washington started carrying salmon on their heads. Before long, the behaviour spread and the salmon hat “fad” was born. Scientists don’t know why the orcas were carrying salmon on their heads because it doesn't seem to serve any practical purpose. The fascinating part is that the novel behaviour spread the same way that such behaviours spread in human culture: It started with a few trendsetters and suddenly it went viral. Image

Juvenile orca can be very playful and depending on whether these are transient orca or another kind of orca, salmon may not be their preferred source of diet intake eg the resident orcas eg northern feed solely on salmon whereas the transients don’t and so will often leave salmon parts preferring to play with dead prey than eat it

vixenuk That sounds like the sort of thing cats do V, but they usually play with their prey before they kill them , out of boredom or hunger

telmel I think its more for sport than intention to kill with cats.I saw my allotment cat Oscar with a field mouse and he just bashed it to bits until it sought it's last under some cabbages. Can't take the cat outta the cat sadly. Oscar just Loves salmon.
