Has the Oscars Lost Its Glamour & Appeal?

In the News

I used to follow the Oscars and really enjoy staying up to see who won what. But last few years I just cant get into it. Maybe the films have changed. Maybe I am getting old. Anyone else expereincing this?

Just heard all nominees are getting goody bags worth £180k. Wouldn't it be nice if that money went to charity on behalf of the nominees?

Lynibis I think some do, donate the contents to charity- I guess for silent auctions but totally agree it would be better if it went there to start with as the stars don’t really need the gifts, I’m guessing

I can't say I've ever watched the Oscars, I'm not into these kind of things

I did used to follow it but don’t watch nearly as many films these days so have less of an interest.

I do check who’s won what though

I'm curious about knowing who/what won each category, but have no interest in watching the ceremony. I find all award shows are very dull affairs to watch. I don't need to watch someone thank a list of people and/or campaign over an issue. There is far too much virtue signalling. For, example, I don't want to listen to someone who frequently uses private jets talk about environmental issues. If anything out of the ordinary occurs it will be covered on the news and well documented on social media.

Also, award ceremonies no longer appear to be impartial. The people that run high profile award shows have allowed themselves to be influenced by external forces. Persistent and loud campaigning groups have successfully coerced change. We no longer know if all nominees/winners have been selected on merit or simply to tick a politically correct box and appease campaigners.

ACR absolutely to your last para. You only have to watch Netflix to see this in blatant action.

👋 I never looked at it as glamorous/appealing (so called celebrities are of no interest to me). Films have been getting progressively worse with unconvincing 'acting'. I've seen a few unsavoury clips from the last 4-5 years - like wrong best film being called out and 'that so called actor' assaulting someone on stage then winning an Oscar minutes later (which he didn't deserve in my opinion). This was like giving him an award for absolutely disgusting behaviour. I would have called the police and sued him.

Consumer Think Chris Rock declined to make a complaint because they were ready to arrest Will Smith at the event after it happened. Cops where even side stage ready to affect the arrest. And that was one weird night!

I think its just that there are only so many stories lines possible as they say. And now there is such a huge library of films in existence that most stories have been told to death. Harder to come up with a new novel way to tell those stories.

Also, I think the economics of streaming services has toltally altered the landscape of entertainment and how it is consumed.

I am doubtful it is due to polictical correctness but who knows.

Not for a long time now. Sadly, like everything else in our 'real world', it's all political and who knows whom.

I've not watched the oscars in about 30 years and not sure why I bothered even back then. The films that matter are the films that most people enjoy and want to see which is the films that are most profitable. Oscars is a celebration of the movie industry mainly for the benefit of actors and directors etc. It means nothing to me and so many times I've watched oscar winning movies that are truly terrible. Like Everything Everywhere All At Once which I started watching but couldn't get through it, it was so awful. Nowadays if I see a film has won an oscar it is more likely to put me off watching it as their criteria for a great film and my criteria are poles apart. Ultimately I like films which typically aren't arty and aren't very dummed down action movies, somewhere in the middle is what I enjoy an action movie or science fiction with a decent story. Ultimately the Oscars mean nothing to me nowadays.
