Paid Time off for the Menopause?
Ask a Question
Should you get paid time off for the Menopause?
Some new guidance says that employers could end up being sued for discrimination if you fail to make reasonable adjustments.
Completely depends on how it is affecting you and if you are actively doing anything to help, same with any illness.
Same with the mental health days and when you are on your period... it affects everyone completely differently. Some people use the 'mental health day' as a day off and they just can't be bothered. Others NEED that time off to recover to relax and regenerate.
These should all be treated as a sick day though. No special time off. You will know the rules of your work place for sick days and have to abide by them or sadly you should reconsider your job and maybe apply for something else whilst you are working if you can't.
I've been SUPER lucky with employers, as long as you are honest with them, I found them quite understanding. It was when I was trying to hide any illness from fear and embarrassment is when there were issues.
I think it should just come under standard sick time, pay from your employer. If at work maybe some negotiations with reasonable adjustments to make it possible to carry out the work.
JLouM Do you think women should get more time off then men, in that case?
SamGoodship Possibly but only because of our biology. Men probably have other issues though too. They also go through some hormonal changes but just not as much as women.
Yes I think women should be paid for time off for the Menopause. It affects their mental health etc so they wouldn't be able as they normally do in their work place.
It depends on the impact of symptoms and to what extent they are debilitating.
I know women who have had depression from the symptoms (some intensely life-limiting) whilst others think there is no such thing as the menopause as they have had NO symptoms, but better yet have never felt as good!
I think the tv programme Davina Macoll made about the menopause really took off and opened peoples eyes, to the impact the menopause has on women and their lives. Both in and out of work. Basically in a nut shell, it was to spell out exactly what it was, ins and outs, and that now, woman don't have to go through it alone. Just detailing all the help available, no matter the womans set up. Very good interesting programme.
