Help With Taking A Passport Photo Yourself

Ask a Question

I have been trying to take a photo with my phone to renew a passport. I haven’t had one for ten years. I was told would be easy to take a digital one on my phone. An app I used said passed and appropriate but when I tried to upload and apply on passport office it said was too poor and didn’t meet the rules!! Do you have any recommendations or should I just go to a booth the old fashioned way? Thank you.

If you could try again on your phone then I would passport photos are expensive now we paid £13 for my daughters last year that was only a bus pass

Leannexxx Crikey that’s pricey especially with the cost of passport itself. Maybe with more daylight it might work 🤞. It was quite late in the afternoon and dark and I couldn’t get the lighting quite right. I’ll try again in more light.

Leannexxx that is extortionate for some photos, if you need them though you have no choice really

The hardest thing I found when I did mine was trying to locate a plain white wall, I think I ended up having to take a few pictures down, it was hard work.

G|ot to the stage I almost went to the local photo booth, but they charge like a wounded bull!

blacklabrador Yes my difficulty too! I’ve been trying in front of white doors but I still get glare/shadow. My apricot wall blended too much.

I got the same error message. I ignored it (I was 100% confident it met the rules), submitted my photo and it was accepted.

Consumer Ah that’s interesting. I did wonder if I could still submit it because it looked fine to me. You got the poor message first? Maybe I’ll try again.

JLouM 👋 I did get that error message first. At the time, there was an option to submit regardless (essentially overriding their system), so I did 😃

JLouM Hang a white/light sheet over a door, do it in natural light and if possible get someone to take the photo. Make sure nothing obscures the face and you have no hair clips or bands, if you must wear glasses make sure there is no reflection and your eyes are fully visible.

We tried doing my husbands one so many times. We tried white sheet over the white doors, natural light, I took the photo, made sure nothing was obscuring his face etc. It kept telling us that it wasn't acceptable. We just went to our local tesco and got them done. £5 for 4 of them and they gave us a code so that when we typed it into the site it was right there.

Many pharmacists do them as do snappy snaps and they run a pass test first.Snappy snaps give an photo upload code which you can use direct on the government passport site as well.NB it's cheaper to apply online.

Go to a photo booth machine and take one there, by take one put your phone on the opposite wall where the camera/screen are and take a pic of yourself

ch7leach Well never thought of that. Clever idea. How would you get phone in right position? Somewhere to rest it on?

That happened for a photo that I took of Mr T - I sent it in anyway and surprisingly it all went though without a hitch.

If you're sure it looks fine, you could submit anyway, it is likely to be accepted. The same happened to me even with a photobooth photo, but once submitted it was fine, and the passport arrived surprisingly quickly! Good luck 😄

The Post Office now does a psecial package that does all the application for you. Its has to be one of the ones that is designated for this www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/passport/digital-check-send-service

Did renewal for mom and it cost just a few quid more than doing it all myself. They take the photo too so you dont have to worry about the dimension requirements. They use recorded return of your original passport and the new one. Really is excellent service

I would recommend going in to the shop (but make sure they have good reviews)as they have a lot experience and will reduce the chances of a delay or any problems that could be caused in process.
