Is Pet Insurance worth It?

Ask a Question

Is pet insurance worth it or are you better putting a little aside each month in a separate account? 🐶 🐱

I have insurance for my dog and have some aside for my rabbits.

I've bought pet insurance recently for the first time so I'm new to the game

Yes it is worth it. Our dog needed an emergency surgery when younger, the insurance paid for it. No way we could have afforded it otherwise, even if we put money aside each month. They also paid for her emergency x-rays and all the expenses when we had to put her down. They dealt with everything for us.

When Naughty Torti Topaz was 10 month old she had to have the bones of her front paw wired together.

Our local Vet rang me after her assessment saying " Can you afford £2000" I said No..

Topaz was treated & her paw made a full recovery, bill was £987.13 altogether..

I got Pet Insurance after, in case anything happened..

This week Topaz disappeared for 3 days we were frantic, she strolled in non the worse for wear yesterday morning, just in need of a good meal, we think she must have got shut in somewhere & are soooo grateful our baby is home no harm done. .

I could have been sooo much worse & that's why she & her brother Phoenix are insured...

We love our pets in the UK. The insurance companies know that. They are always going to rinse us for money😔

I would say absolutely yes! Vet bills can run into the thousands so even saving for my fur baby would be no where near enough if she needed an op and after care treatments etc.

I hesitate to says its worth it, as I think its a bit of a scam, but with vets bills going through the roof you do need it, especially for dogs. We had one of our cats insured and one that wasnt. Never had a successful claim for - the only vet bills came in just under the £100 threshold we had to pay! Our dog though had bills for over £1000 when a puppy so we were very glad we had him insured.

Now my dogs are older, premiums are high, they also take about 60% excess so for me it's definitely not worth it, I put money aside each month in a high interest account. Worth it if they're young dogs though where excesses and premiums are considerably lower

I've always thought you had to pay part of it yourself if your pet get's ill. So what's the point. If my dog needed medical treatment that cost a paw and a leg I know it would simply add to the stress if I was told I had to say half of the cost myself after having paid for the Insurance. I would rather borrow the whole amount from family rather than have all the extra stress and disappointment of pet insurance.

I personally do not think it’s worth it. I have had many pets over the years. It worked out cheaper to put money aside for any vet treatment. One of our dogs needed a big operation and the vet said if we had insurance the operation would not have been covered by any insurance.

I'm thinking of getting a girl dog 🐕 and want to be a good parent if she has puppies, I think I would get insurance for that alone. Perhaps when she gets older, perhaps not?

Has anybody had this situation and would welcome constructive feedback.

My late cats bill of £4k made it worth it, even with a co pay of 20% (age) plus two excesses £750 was so much more affordable for me than the whole amount. I was able to do everything that she needed without worrying about the bill because she was insured upto £7k. Could never have self insured for that amount.

I was paying insurance for my doggo, but the premium was getting silly, so I put away some money for him every month.

He has been poorly lately and treatment has cost £1k though

I’ve had my dog insured since she was a pup on a lifetime policy and the monthly insurance premiums weren’t too bad with a £120 excess. In the early years I didn’t have to make a claim but just over two years she was diagnosed with lymphoma and needed doggy chemo over 19 weeks.

There would have been no way I could have covered those vet bills without the insurance.
