Police Told Not to Arrest Criminals because Prison's Are Overcrowded?
In the News
Unbelievable as it may seem according to The Times they obtained evidence from the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) that stated Police should pause “any planned operations where large numbers of arrests may take place” because of the difficulty in finding prison space for them.
Do any of you think this incredible document should be made transparent for the public to the shame of the NPCC or do you think it's none of our business?Personally I think some heads need to role at that department.
The country is bankrupt and criminals don't fear the punishment anyway. We need to get our head around the financial issues of this country and realise we cannot act like we used to throwing money at problems as we no longer have that money. This isn't just incompetent politicians it is incompetent consumers who have exported huge amounts of their income leading to a huge trade deficit and huge borrowing. It is also a legacy of the huge wasted money and resources that went into the EU and terrible trade deficit we have with them that destroyed so much of our industry. We tied ourselves to a single market we couldn't compete in and also paid huge sums for the privilege.
All these stupid decisions and actions have taken us to this point.
The punishment is going to have to be much more severe and sadly we need to return to the death penalty. We can't afford the millions to house evil sadistic people for decades.
As we become poorer there will be much more crime anyway so you have to up the punishment. Idealism often leads to more suffering you have to make practical and realistic choices based on the circumstances. Japan is a country with extremely low crime where you can walk the streets safely at night but still they have the death penalty. When we start pitying criminals because what happens to them is the time when crime will start falling at the moment criminals are often winners. The punishment in no way matches the crime.
BonzoBanana You are spot on B, its time to stop turning prisons into Butlins holiday camps and retain the death penalty as some US states do. Oh to have a country like Japan, hardly any crime and people respecting each other, i doubt that will ever be achieved here , we have a different mentality to the Japanese
telmel Yes I know its horrible to return to a death penalty and in many ways seems like a retro step but you have to get real based on our circumstances. We all die anyway, we have 60 years give or take 60 years. Someone who has taken life often for sadistic pleasure should be humanely put to sleep and buried or cremated+buried in a unmarked grave. We have so few resources nowadays the government keeps borrowing and borrowing and our debts are unbelievable now. It's not unrealistic to say there is £150k of debt for every single person in this country, that isn't just standard government debt, its pension shortfalls and many other financial responsibilities we have. Even if we had a well run government tomorrow it would be at least 50 years of austerity paying back all this debt and get back to a clean sheet.
I wonder what is going to happen in this country as a huge part of the general population and both right and left of politics are clueless and don't really understand the real world.
I can't see labour doing very well when in power and certainly the tories have shown themselves to be utterly incompetent nowadays. We need a party focused on industry, farming and workers and making sure we work together as a country, no stupid idealism or elitism. It doesn't have to be a left wing or right wing political movement just middle of the road but with practical solutions to problems.
BonzoBanana We had a Canadian Bank of England governor B, maybe we should start accepting outsourced governments that are not British, i would vote for a Japanese one
BonzoBanana The death penalty??? It's never coming back in this country. Both political parties are useless especially when it comes to crime, drugs and illegal immigrants. Now the police have joined in being useless at arresting criminals. To be honest the police are blunt just office workers and nothing more.
jam45 You may well be right about the death penalty never coming back but the financial issues are utterly huge and people will face much greater levels of poverty leading to more crime. There are a huge amount of innocent people now facing the death penalty on the street who are stabbed to death and other violent crimes. We are now facing such violent criminals returning to the street as there aren't the resources to keep them locked up which will obviously add to the level of violence on the street plus the fact such violent people are released will show to society there is no real punishment for violence no actual deterrent. This can only last so long before we have to accept a new reality of dealing with crime. Ultimately politics will swing to the far right as the only hope of dealing with crime which is not what we want to happen. We want a rational and controlled solution which sadly will likely need to include the death penalty but in a much more controlled way with proper safeguards. If we let society turn into anarchy before we do anything then likely it will be too late.
Sweden now has a gun murder rate 30x that of London with Turkish drug gangs and other players causing phenomenal levels of violence. Many countries are losing control of crime, same in France. We are not alone in this situation. Many of these countries have ended up in this situation because they put idealism ahead of practical solutions to problems. They became soft on crime and created huge problems for themselves.
I saw the story yesterday, absolutely ridiculous, you can bet that loads of prisoners are being released early too
Not surprised and there were countries that freed prisoners as long as they'd go somewhere else (e.g. from a Latin American country to the U.S.).
Moreover, the (un)elected Prime Minister of the U.K. announced the General Election... Whomever it is, it's just as bad as he is at running the country.
"Conservative" yeah, right.
Years of underfunding all layers of the justice system has reduced the whole thing to a joke. Most crimes go un-investigated. If charges are made then there can be months to wait for a trial. Then if they do get a prison sentence they are released early anyway.
didbygraham That underfunding is only going to get worse, each consecutive government is faced with more and more debt and higher interest charges on that debt which they have to pay.
They are going to have to pull some rabbits out of hats I think. If they don't reinvest in this countries infrastructure, employment, crime problem etc we may as well give up.
Ridiculous. The system is broke. The tories have run the country into the ground. Not arresting or sending criminals to prison may as well get rid of the police altogether cos the country is about to get lawless
Lol sounds funny couldn't make it up! Maybe we should all Rob a bank! The prisons are full! Pays to be a criminal lol
