Can You Post a Gif from Latest Deals App? + New Updates
Latest Deals
Hey everyone!
We have begun to roll out a new update to the Latest Deals app.
Amongst many of the improvements should be the ability to post a gif in the comments.
Please could you help us test it? Please could you update the app to the latest version (should be version 3.1) and see if you can post a gif in the comments here?
Other updates
- You can now see trending labels on the homepage to see what's really hot
- You can now refer a friend from within the app
- Bigger, brighter messages when you earn points
- If you're on the phone and press a link to the Latest Deals website, it'll open the app if you have it (similar to how Amazon does it)
- Crazy number of bug fixes making it more reliable and less prone to crash - Kelsey rewrote code for pretty much all parts of the app.
- Dark mode - better, darker, more mysterious
- Supermarket price comparison now has a tutorial for new users
In a documentary with Sir Bradley Wiggins, it was asked how he led the British cycling team to over eight Olympic medals. He revealed it was not one single thing, but a hundred 1% improvements. Combined, these 1% improvements became 100%, and that is how we've approached the Latest Deals app.
We hope you enjoy it and any feedback, bugs, or problems is very much encouraged and welcomed!
Hey guys
Good to see the new gif option in the app is working well!
I wrote up a nitty gritty list of most of the updates for anyone particularly bored and/or curious!
- We’ve fixed a bug where sometimes we (unintentionally, honest!) ignored the expiration date you set on a post.
- If there’s an error with the expiration date (e.g. it’s in the past) we now let you know with a nice error message. This compliments our previous method of relying on your physic powers.
- If you used dark mode you may have noticed (or rather - not noticed!) that you couldn’t see a bunch of helpful hints and placeholders. As if by magic they now show in both light and dark modes.
- iPhones use a fancy HEIC format to save images. The LD app until recently rejected this “fad” in favour of old school jpegs. We’ve now on trend and support iPhone’s default image format too.
- We’ve made it easier to tap and change an uploaded image - even if you originally uploaded a reallllllyyyy tiny one.
- The code we use to help navigate everyone through the app (from the list of deals, to a specific deal and everywhere else) has been completely overhauled. It should now be quicker to move around the app, especially on older devices.
- We’ve got a fancy new style of popup for when you’re logging in or sharing a deal.
- We’ve fixed the INCREDIBLY annoying copy/paste bug on Android that made it super difficult to paste a URL when sharing a deal. Sorry it took this long!
- The app now has brand new “toasts” (the little popups that appear to let you know if you’ve earned points or completed an action in the app).
- We were in a bit of a rush to get the app out originally but have now had more time to improve the code and make sure it’s ship shape.
- All the awesome third party open source software we use in the app has been updated to their latest versions.
- The number of comments a like has no longer glow in dark mode - instead they’re subtle and shadowy (like batman)
- We think we’ve improved the styling of user profile pages, retailer pages and tag pages. Let us know what you think!
- We’ve updated the styling of the rewards pages to make it clearer which rewards you’ve claimed, can claim or are are soon to be able to claim!
- It was often quite confusing as to whether you were on the login page or the signup screen. We’ve made this a little clearer with a helping hand
- We’ve tested the app extensively on good connections, normal connections and downright bad connections and made lots of little tweaks and improvements to hopefully make the app more enjoyable to use no matter how bad your reception!
- The app is now a lot more refresh happy. We now try and live up to our name and provide you with the Latest Deals! Moving between tabs (Deals, Freebies, Comps, etc) will now refresh the content rather than relying on you to pull down to refresh. If you leave the app and return later a handy “refresh” prompt will appear - one tap and you’ll have brand new content!
- After the app loaded deals it was occasionally very protective of them and didn’t want to let them go. We can understand wanting to hold onto a good deal but not at the expense of your phone’s memory. We now properly clear these out.
- If you decided you didn’t want to see freebies with postage it was previously an unintentionally permanent decision! You can now toggle this option on and off at will.
- We’ve lots of new app users who are after our Supermarket Price Comparison tool. As this is hidden away in the menu it resulted in quite a few confused reviews from people who didn’t understand or couldn’t find it. We now provide a little tour of the app when it first opens to guide people who have downloaded the app to the correct place.
- We’ve enabled universal links - this means if you follow a link from our social media and have our app installed it’ll now auto-magically open up the link in the app rather than the LD website!
- Some supermarkets were reluctant to appear in the price comparison results on a few Android phones. Every phone should now have every supermarket.
- If you’d been naughty and not kept on top of your notifications the icon would look a bit odd with 10+ unread notifications. We’re now more accommodating and display the icon properly - even if you have 100+ unread notifications!
- If you were particularly tap happy you could end up navigating to the same deal multiple times. Now, no matter how hard you try, you’ll only get to the deal you’re after once.
- We’ve improved the code that scrolls to a specific comment - e.g. You get a notification that someone has liked your awesome comment. When you tap on the notification you should be more reliably redirected to your comment.
- Android users - rejoice! We’ve now set the status bar (the little thing with icons at the top of the phone) to being translucent so it blends into the LD app more.
- You can now easily refer a friend (and earn points!) using the LD app. Just make sure you’re logged in and tap ‘Refer a friend’ from the menu.
- We’ve tweaked all the areas you tap (links, liking, commenting, etc) to be a little bigger and easier to tap.
- Older Android devices may have found they kept getting logged out. This was not only annoying but also unintended. It should now be fixed.
- The first time you open the app you now get a small, 3 page introduction to LD.
- We’ve separated out retailer pages so that you can either see all the deals or all the vouchers from any particular retailer.
- You can now easily share broadcasts with a friend by tapping the three dots and hitting “share”
- We’ve updated the icon to scroll to the last comment on a post - it’s now a downwards arrow. Give it a tap to see what it does.
- We’ve made it clearer when a toggle is “off” vs “on” for android users.
- Both the App Store and Google Play have fancy new images. The old ones required exceptional eyesight whilst the new ones can be read comfortably at a distance.
