Poundland Pricing
Ask a Question
I have just received a Christmas email from Poundland. Advertising Christmas decorations for £1.50. Stag head £1.50. sparkly letters £1.50. 50 pack baubles £1.50. You get the idea. Not one item £1. How do they get away with this? It’s called Poundland, everything’s £1.
I've heard that argument before, they explained it on the tv programme that they did, but I can't remember what the reason was. It has been a long time since everything in there was £1.
MrsCraig this was tv program on Poundland

I went in one of my local Poundlands yesterday and could see quite a few items at £1.50 but still many at £1 and others at £2 and £5. It's very difficult with inflation to keep to £1. In the past they used to sell some decent items at £1 and to be honest I wish they just went up to £1.20 rather than disappear from the range. It's still a great value store for many items but you have to be careful as some items sold elsewhere typically in supermarkets for 80p become £1 items in poundland and they have special smaller packs of some items that don't represent great value.
At current levels of inflation they might have to change name. Maybe just a symbol to avoid future sign changes. Infinity Land Maybe.
Went into our local store yday and they are now selling loads of freezer foods, felt like we were in a supermarket! Have to check the price of everything now as hardly anything is a pound anymore.
Maybe not quite a pound but still great deals worth a look, some of the store is still a pound and a business still needs to make money
Not sure why they still call it Poundland to be honest, prices are all over the place now , just another discount retailer really, but their pricing can be confusing especially if an item is not priced on the shelf, which is a common occurrence in my local store
I must admit I hadn't thought of the name for a while as our Poundland shop closed down. I remember seeing a documentary and they were explaining due to the weakness of the £, increased production, transportation costs rtf it was I longer feasable to sell things at a £1, but they wanted to continue with the name as the public trusted that.
Apparently it's been been a few years now.... I'm a home bargains fan myself
Poundland dropped their familiar slogan of “Everything’s £1” after changes to their pricing structure means everything is no longer £1.

We have a Poundland on our local high street, and I shop there quite often. I've noticed the changes to the prices, with more and more items being £2.00, £5.00, etc. And in our one there's a clothing section in the back, with all sorts of different prices. There are still a lot of good bargains in there though. It just gets confusing when it isn't made clear what the prices of certain items are, or when people put things back in the wrong place so the £2 and £1 stuff gets mixed up.
angelik I bought my daughter some leggings in there (2 for £3.80 I think) and they’re really good quality so I’m happy to go back and shop for clothes there.
It's been a long time since Poundland products were all £1, I wouldn't go out of my way to go in but sometimes have a wee nosey when I'm passing, I have noticed that they are now selling cheap clothes too.
Poundland have one of the lowest margins of any retailer and all they sell is relatively high volume items and their shops aren't typically that large so its a good result for customers. So I struggle to be critical of them because many of their £1.50 items like batteries would probably be charged at something like £4.99 in Currys or £3.99 in Robert Dyas etc. Many shops operate on a very variable margin where they think they can get away with it. It's more about finding the limits of what customers will spend on an item.
Since they started selling other things at different prices, I shop there less. Mind you, I still find good deals in there
Visited two Poundland stores today and the prices have increased since the last time (think 2022).
WD40 (80ml) used to be £1, now it's £1.50 (still cheaper than Amazon, tbh).
And cashew? The price has sky rocketed for that, it used to be £1, now it's £1.60~£2. Even at Aldi, who apparently have it for 99p although I couldn't find a single bag of it.

This sucks.
PhilipMarc Not only are the products more expensive than other places but also the size is sometimes smaller. You think you are getting a good deal as it’s poundland but this is not always the case.
Not been in my local poundshop in years. Stuff was naff and not worth the money ended by more expensive in the end to replace the pundland stuff
Oh don't get me going..went to one recently and had to keep looking at the shelf prices because everything isn't a pound and not worth the extra they charge..what a load of nonsense.
Annoying store with varying prices and smaller sized packs specially made for them . In my local store the prices are often not clearly marked either. Why not just change their name to something more appropriate
