Should You Get a Pre Nup for Pets?

Ask a Question

When you get married, should you sign a pre nup detailing who gets the pets?

I've heard of people fighting over pets when they have split up or trying to sort out some sort or shared custody.

Tricky one. Pets acquired/adopted after marriage or before? 😅

My ex partner and l together brought a Hungarian Vizsla in 2011 at seven weeks old, l left him in 2017 and didn't hesitate in taking my little soldier with me as l found out that my ex and he's ex wife had a chocolate labrador that they would leave in their garage all day when they were both at work..disgusting way to treat a pet, so no pre nup would of ever been written/signed by me, he would never had any say in me taking my soldier, she's just turned thirteen and is my world 😊🐕❤

It is a difficult one especially for pets acquired within the relationship. No couple really want to talk about what they will do if they split up because no ones really thinking that way.

No I don't think you should. It sort of assumes that you will definitely split up at some point and that can make it more likely to happen. The pet goes to whoever looked after it the most and will look after it properly afterwards.

I would not get a prenup for pets before marriage, as I do not believe my partner would want the responsibility of looking after my adorable little monster. LOL - However, if you have well-behaved pets who are no problem whatever, this might be a sensible option. Pets are like children and are often used as a bargaining chip or way to show spite during divorce. Joint custody is always an option, especially if one or both partners are employed.

I think it is a good idea because some people take on the pets alone and they end up not being able to take care of it.

Had my cats with my ex. We split no chance was he getting them. Left me in a mess. Had to move house. Cats had to move in with their granny. It wasn't great but they loved it. My boy got 2 best friends and learnt to not be so anxious. My female learnt to share. So a winner for them. Not that my female would agree
