At What Age Should Parents Stop Buying Sibling Birthday Presents?

Ask a Question

I'm wrapping my youngest son birthday present. I have got his brother a little something like I always have. I'm just wondering what would be the best age to stop that?

I can honestly say I've never done that before my little one doesn't seem that bothered when it's her sister's birthday She just wants some cake

Imnotcheap my mother in law used to do it for her granddaughters as she's got custody of them she stopped when they were about 3 years old because they would expect it all the time

I remember when I was a child my mum did the same thing, think we stopped getting them when we were in secondary school so probably 11 or 12 years old.

I've never heard of anyone doing this before. I know that if a friend of mine has a second baby I will take a gift for both kids the first time I visit after the birth but have never heard of anyone getting both kids a present when it is one of their birthdays. I would say when the oldest started secondary school.

When I was little we were just told it was either mine or my sister’s birthday on that day. The other one didn’t get a present as well. Probably got cake though.

I have never heard of anyone doing this before and as I had four children I’m glad I didn’t. My children accepted it was their siblings birthday and the day was their day. Reading other people’s comments I would recommend before they went to secondary school.

It's such a recent thing. My mum does it for my nephew and niece. Never did it for my brother and me.

I can foresee problems. If you give the older child something surely you would have to give younger child something when it is older ones birthday? If you leave it too late to stop the non birthday gift that child will wonder why and may be upset, may also not like his sibling getting a gift when it's his birthday. I have never done this and have explained that the birthday child shares the lovely day and vice versa, with the cake and possible party etc.

Lynibis I will discuss it with them and come up with plan after both birthdays this year. Big sister opted out to get bigger presents on her own birthday should be easier

I’ve never done this cos with 4 kids it would have been too expensive for me. It was bad enough when the oldest and youngest shared the same birthday only 6yrs apart. Think they both did well out of it cos the oldest 1s friends knew her brothers birthday was same day and vice versa so in way they got twice presents other 2 got. They were allowed to bring x amount of friends to their party’s depending on whether it was in house or out somewhere. If 6 friends were invited it meant my oldest and youngest got 12 presents whereas if it was 1 of my other 2s birthdays they only got 6 presents from friends. They never seemed to mind r realise

We've nether done that. The only time we did that was when the sibling of the older child was born. So family bought gifts for both. We also bought the older child a present from the baby too

we never had that in our family - we just got our presents on our own birthdays. My baby sister (now over 50 years old!) had her birthday very close to Christmas so for a few years got an extra half birthday in June to help make up for it, but that didnt last!

I have actually never heard of any parents that I know doing this sort of thing, presents are just bought for a particular persons birthday.
