Pret a Manger Cracking down on 'Free' Coffee Loophole

Ask a Question

You dont get much free nowadays, but even when you pay extra for a service they want to take choices away from you

So Pret A Manger has launched a crackdown on its coffee subscribers sharing free drinks with friends and colleagues

Thats fine if the drinks were free , but the subscription is £30 per month, not cheap

This allowed subscribers to order up to five coffees each day and 20% off food. To get the freebie, all people needed to do was scan a QR code

Now to stop people sharing with their friends and family you will need to sign into your app to access the code , so only the subscriber can use it

What if a person cannot get to the store for some reason , maybe too busy working , they will lose the perk for that day

I think they have a nerve , they know they will save a lot of money by stopping this , a bit like neflix card sharing

Who will benefit, the shareholders, they will get extra money to buy more coffees !!!

Do you subscribe to this ?

A lot of Offices will get one person to go get the coffees so they will take it in turns during the day to get them. There will be a way to get round the loophole

Jerseydrew It will stop individuals J, you need your phone to sign into the app so a friend would need to have your phone with them to get the coffees, at least thats how i perceive it

So maybe Pret think people wont go to this trouble for a free coffee ?

If you have a Waitrose loyalty card you can buy something minimal and get free coffee from the machine. I’m not keen on machines personally but if I was short on money I would do it.

JLouM That's generous of Waitrose J , but the other thing is Pret a Mangers subscription gives 20% discount off food, so subscribers are being limited on this too if wanting to share with friends

I would not pay £30 a year for this myself for the limited time i would go there

telmel Yes but it’s like everything. Costa reduced how many coffees you can collect before a free one, Tesco Clubcard points are only worth a third of what they used to be. All businesses seem to be offering less and less.

I suppose if they are unable to get to the store themselves they will just cancel the subscription. I don’t think it will stop it that much overall

To be honest if I joined such a scheme I would exploit it to the max probably having a coffee even when I didn't really fancy one just because Pret A Manger is in sight. The thing with these schemes is some people subscribe and don't use them enough to justify it and others really exploit such schemes. It would seem more logical to have a scheme where you pay a much smaller subscription and maybe get the coffee's half price and then they probably wouldn't care if exploited as it would likely still be profitable for them. So you could buy 5 coffees all half price. It feels like the scheme is poorly thought out to be honest.

Its a business so they obviously dont want to get taken to cleaners. You would do the same as a consumer to rinse the offer. And you would do the same as a business to change it to cost less. Then it comes to the economics of whether the subscription is still attractive with the changes.

Is Pret like a budget Starbucks/Gregs?

I've honestly never visited one.

PhilipMarc My nearest one is in the Clarks Outlet Village at Street. Just seems to be sandwiches and coffee, looked really nice but I was going to the Prezzo next door at the time. There certainly aren't enough Pret A Mangers near me to make the subscription worthwhile but there seems to be a huge amount in London so I'm sure the subscription would make more sense there.

I’m sure people will just share the app access instead - if they really want to get around it

My daughter pays this subscription but I don’t think she’s uses it to the max but I’m sure others do.
