Price Matches/ Lowest Price Promises - Worthwhile?

Money Saving

Posting to get people's feedback on their experiences of price matches/ lowest price promises.

In your experience what is worth jumping through the usual hoops in order to get the same price as another retailer.

Aren't you usually better off just going with the cheapest retailer in the first place.

Speaking from experience, have generally been burned trying to use price matches, promises and ended up missing out on the best deal as a consequence.

I do some price comparisons but mostly I try to factor in what I want to do and where I want to go on a certain day. If I’m going that way anyway I try to find the cheapest product where I am. It’s a bit mad going a long way out just because it’s the cheapest there, if you weren’t going anyway. Wasted fare/fuel.

JLouM sound advice, but perhaps I wasn;t that clear. I'm asking about the price match/lowest price "guarantees" that some retailers have in order to get your business

Just do your own research then go with the cheapest or best deal that suits you. Forget prices matching rarely worth the time and effort to do this anymore, years ago it worked well and you often got a bit extra , but not anymore.

Mango4 I think the pricematch promise that stands out to me is the one you used to get with John Lewis, because they usually give a much better warranty of what you're sold. Unfortunately this doesn;t seem to be available anymore.

The ocado, Tesco price promise is rubbish. They basically give you a credit voucher for the difference in price with Tesco which expires in 28 days so you have to buy again within a month to make use of it. I did a Ocado shop recently because I had a £15 off £60 voucher so 25% off and just kept to items that were competitively priced but had no interest in their Tesco price match. The last Ocado shop I did was getting on a year ago so certainly not their best customer.

I do think the Aldi/Lidl price match Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco run is quite useful as I'm not keen on Aldi or Lidl quality and they have a much smaller range of goods too so I find that really good especially as Sainsburys have been regularly sending me vouchers recently on top. However I have to say these so called price matches are rubbish in marketing terms because it's basically free advertising for Lidl or Aldi that they only price match at Tesco, Asda or Sainsburys.

Animons The price match is at Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys where they basically state for a lot of commonly bought items they price match either Aldi, Lidl or both. So you can go those supermarkets and pay the same for that type of items plus of course you have a much wider range of goods to choose from as Aldi and Lidl have limited ranges in comparison. I personally find the products at Tesco better on average than the same items at Aldi and Lidl mostly and Asda and Sainsburys are somewhere in the middle in quality between Tesco and Aldi/Lidl but of course that depends on what you buy. My local Tesco is fantastic for fruit and veg with great quality, great prices and great range.

I dont take a lot of notice of these as at the end of the day I cant get to Aldi or Lidl so it does not matter to me how much my shopping would cost there. I did like the price match that Asda ran a few years back where you entered the receipt details the next day and would quite often get a voucher for the difference - and quite often it was a fair amount.

John Lewis were wonderful back in the day of matching prices, unfortunately they stopped that. I don’t know of any store doing this now.
