Pulling a Sickie during the Heatwave?

Ask a Question

Has anyone pulled a sickie so they can enjoy the hot weather? 🤣

The shops and beer gardens round here are teeming with people lol.

No, naye, never...

As I work in Supported Living I will just close the curtains, make sure the two people I support are looked after, give them plenty of drinks & when it's cooler in the evening take them for a walk...

I have just had 4 days off, 2 Annual Leave , 2 my days off so why should someone else have to cover for me to take time off just because it's hot ...

People have annual leave and some work part time flexible, from home, freelance, etc. I wouldn’t take sick for a day off. Knowing my luck I’d get genuinely sick anyway and then would be detrimental to my job.

I have never pulled a sickie but i do remember last year when we closed at around lunchtime for a week or so cause it was too hot to work.

I'm sure plenty of employed people do this; however, they may be caught out by not drinking enough water, not using sun cream often enough and staying outside for too long in the sun. Sunstroke and sunburn are really unpleasant, and it would be rather ironic.

I haven’t but could imagine many people have chosen to. Especially some people really struggle with the heat and lack of sleep etc.

Sickie!!! What's that? I'm a live-in carer since 2017, in the past l have had food poisoning and still dragged my backside out of bed and worked...however l use to work for a solicitors where certain colleagues would pull a sickie but come in the next day with a tad suntan 😂😂

No I haven't but if I were not retired I might have had to. I cannot cope and often feel giddy, fatigued and unable to perform small chores, I just sit in a darkened room. I don't think Sun worshippers realise how distressing this heat can be for those who find it hard to tolerate.

Lynibis I think that would be genuine though. I think original poster was getting at people out in the sun on beach/in pub gardens while on the sick. I would never do it and you never know who else at work might see you, say they are on entitled annual leave or something.

JLouM yes I did realise that but was putting forward the view that some people like me wouldn't actually be pulling a sickle and many people wouldn't believe you just can't cope with heat. I am not sure employers would accept it as reasonable to take sick leave for it.

I may be wrong or it may have changed, but I know there is a temp below which you are not obliged to work but there isn't an upper temperature.

My son did some cheffing when he was a young man and I could have cried for him working in a kitchen on days like this surrounded by grills, ovens, hobs and microwaves.

Lynibis Ah yes some people do get unwell with the heat. I think not much an employer can do about that if you decide to take a sick day. The symptoms if severe enough would be reasonable. I think that is correct what you say about working in a certain temperature. I’m not a chef but I do work with chefs in such a kitchen. Yes it’s not nice in the intense heat. We do our best with open windows, doors and electric fans.

JLouM ...I feel for you & others like you, I have worked in kitchens so know how bad it gets..

My sister works in hospital catering & she dreads this weather BUT she would never pull a sickie, however the other day it was soo hot that she was physically sick & had to take a breather .
